Andy Becker, a Santa Barbara California native, coming fresh off his year aboard the Decline/Team America program has been swooped up by his long time coach and mentor Duncan Riffle to race the North American and US National series races in hopes of earning a spot on the US National Team to compete at this years World Championships.

Brad Benedict had this to say about signing with Duncan Riffle’s new race team. “I couldn't imagine a better racing opportunity for myself in the upcoming World Cup season. Not only do I get the chance to race with a top American racer, but get to watch, work and learn how to become a better racer myself. Having Duncan as a teammate I know we will push each other as riders on and off the track. Having solid race support from our sponsors, and such a good team, I can’t wait to get out there and start getting some good results for the 2009 season.”

Andy Becker had this to say about joining the squad; “I am very excited to join Duncan Riffles new race team in 2009. I feel that training and racing with Duncan and Brad will vastly improve my riding. I am really looking forward to this up coming season and feel it will be my best yet.”

Brad shows some serious talent and potential with his willingness and positive attitude to learn and grow in to one of the best riders in the world. We get along great and really push ourselves to work harder, push longer and ride faster. I feel it will be a great relationship that will see real success in the years to come. Andy Becker, just turning 16, is as well, a very promising young Jr that I have coached for a few years now, seen develop and feel that with the right support emotionally and physically can do great things. “ –says team owner and racer Duncan Riffle.

This team will be focused not only on great success in racing but branding and marketing our culture and lifestyle in an effort to build and pro¬mote mountain biking and the action sports world. We will be pushing our image, lifestyle and brands associated with us to and past the point of just winning a race. Although it is our primary focus and goal, we understand that winning a race isn’t all that matters. But in fact promoting, advertising, developing products and branding an image of success and combining it with popular culture can become just as important if not more so in the long run.

Duncan’s new race program has teamed up with Giantnerd.com and the launch of their new website. Randall Weidberg, President of Giantnerd® had this to say about the new team and the epic launch of the site.

“Giantnerd® is excited to partner with Duncan Riffle and the launch of his downhill World Cup Team. Duncan’s downhill World Cup success, image, and ability to reach and rally the niche cycling, action sports and lifestyle community make our relationship extremely exciting. Duncan is a talented Downhill rider and trusted member of our targeted audience and we are looking forward to him and his team representing our brand, image, and social shopping community. Participation, Integrity, and knowledge are essential to the Giantnerd® social shopping community. We are looking forward to Duncan being an active member in Giantnerd® and success in the Word Cup circuit.”

Maybe Shaums could help out a fellow Santa Barbarian and pilot part-time for the team? JK.(He's still fast enough) It would be cool to see Duncan announce California's "Marin Bikes" as the team's bike sponsor. Just a thought.

Of all the ppl that ride bikes around SB Duncan is the probably the least friendly person you'll cross paths with. You would think being one of the best known American racers and a professional athlete would force you to develop some sort of personality. Maybe he should hang out with Cam McCaul and something will rub off...

I have to say that Duncan is quite advanced as a business professional. Perhaps the reason Mountain biking is no longer televised, covered by decent sponsorship and has pathetic prize money (ie Dan took home $500 for Bootleg where surfing is taking home 6 figures), is that we seem so judgmental in this sport. Maybe if we supported each other and worked to get back on TV and tried to attract some decent sponsorship then there wouldn't be so many piss poor DH riders. We like all bikes and all riders so let's drop our egos and opinions because the sponsors read this stuff and are turned off on the sport. Our goal is to get the sport to the X games and back on TV. Any of you want to get rich? Tired of wrenching and working retail? Just a thought.

Interesting observations. I agree, all riders should be friendly and positive in our sport; especially the high profile ones seeking sponsorship.
