Nanaimo Super D March 18, 2007

The Island Cup series kickes off this weekend with a Super D race at Doumont in Nanaimo. A super D race is best described as a downhill, cross country race. Super D races normally lack the technical danger packed elements of a downhill race and, in most cases, have some significant pedaling. Racers will be timed individually but here's where the Nanaimo Super D makes it interesting....racers will start five at a time. The race starts out on a fire road before dipping into upper Armagedon then out onto another fire road for some more pedalling then finishing off on Cripple Creek. The course is a total of 2.62 kms and has lots of single track along with a few short climbs and tricky descents. Robin Hutton of Arrowsmith Bikes Nanaimo www.arrowsmithbikesnan.com says that the winning time for this race should be around 8 - 8.5 minutes and the bike of choice is a 6 inch travel bike or less.

To race all you need is $15 and an island cycling club membership that is affiliated with Cycling BC. A person can join the Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club on site for $35 and this membership will enable the member to race in any Island Series Event or you can get a one day insurance license.

To get there: From the island highway turn on the northern Jinglepot Rd exit. Take an immediate right onto Biggs Rd, which will turn into Weigles Rd. Follow this road to the end of the pavement, just past the motocross track on your right you will find registration.

Pre-rides 9:00
Registration 10:00 - 11:30
Race Start 12:00

The race was called a Super D and the DH is on April 15. See below

A super D race is best described as a downhill cross country race. They normally lack the technical danger packed elements of the downhill and in most cases, have some significant pedaling.
Usually, a Super D is a timed event and can have either individual start times or a mass, Le Mans style start where everyone goes at the same time.

This is a great event a lot of people can enjoy. There isn't a whole lot of climbing so you don't have to be in great shape, and you don't need a $3,000.00 downhill bike to make it down.

Any bike will do for a Super D race, but this category of racing is where the all-mountain/trail bikes with 4, 5, and 6 inches of travel can really excel.

The race was great!!! I arrive late fueled with coffee and a Cliff Bar. I was registered, raced and outta there in less than 2.5 hours. THAT"S ORGANIZATION.

Oh yeah... When the race organizer suggests 5" travel or less... Listen.

Thanks Robin and Crew.

Hats off to the organizers, but with all the great downhill runs available at dumont am I the only one wondering why the race so x-country oriented, especially given that it was the first in a downhill series?
