The 2006 mountain biking season is underway at Panorama Mountain Village – kick-started by the 2006 Mad Trapper Mountain Bike Race, held June 23-25.

In past seasons, the focus of mountain biking at Panorama has been on developing new trails and new features. This year, it will be on maintaining the excellent trails serviced by our high speed Mile One Quad. A new trail called Stiffy will also be cut this summer, and natural as well as wood features will be added to this trail later in the season."The entire Bike Park team of trail Crew and patrollers are looking forward to another great year at Panorama's Kona Groove Approved Bike Park. The trails are looking good and opening weekend was a success,” said Andrew Cradduck, Bike Park Manager.

“We have hired a team of experienced staff who happen to be enthusiastic riders. The trail crew has been plugging away over the past five weeks now, making sure the trails are in top form for the season,” Cradduck explained.

“For the safety of our riders, we have four Bike Patrollers returning from the winter season, all with many years of experience in outdoor emergency care,” he added.

Dogtown & Bender are two newer trails that were developed last season and have some hardcore features. The focal point of Bender is the Alcatraz series of features, aptly named The Rock, Cell Block 1, 2 and 3, the Green Mile and Narrow Escape. Dogtown has 473 feet of wooden ramps and "skinnies”.

Mountain bikers from all over North America took part in the 2006 Mad Trapper Bike Race at Panorama Mountain Village, last weekend.

On Friday evening bikers flew through the air, and hit the dirt for the first ever Jump Jam.

Saturday afternoon riders bumped, jumped and crashed their way down the 4-Cross Event. Brian Eller captured the title in the Pro Men’s race; Justin Willoughby took the Open Men’s; Rider Dan Csokonay captured first in the Jr. Men; in the women’s Michelle Dumaresq finished first, and Stacey Kohut took first for the 4-Wheelers.

Over 240 bikers competed in Sunday’s Downhill. There were a number of spectacular crashes, but most completed the challenging run. Kurt Ludemark, of Williams Lake, BC scorched the course to win the Men’s Elite category in a time of 3:19.77. Tyler Gnitt of Kamloops took second, with Nick Quinn of Calgary in third. In the Women’s Elite race Michelle Dumaresq of Edmonton clocked 4:03.33, Tanya Grunsky of Kelowna took second, and Kelly Kozevnikov of North Vancouver third.

Weather and trail conditions were excellent through the weekend. Extensive work through early summer meant conditions remained hard & fast.

The Panorama Mountain Village Bike Park is open between 10am and 8pm every Saturday, and between 10am and 5pm through the rest of the week. The next big mountain bike event is the Panorama Cup on the Labour Day weekend.
