Topeak-Ergon Team EU and crankbrothers have partnered to help raise funds and awareness for Prochorus

In partnership with top athletes, crankbrothers has launched the Crankbrothers for Others charitable giveback initiative to support bike-related causes around the world.

Giving back has always been an important part of our business practices,” said Kellen Trachy, Global Marketing Manager, crankbrothers. “We’ve enjoyed a longstanding relationship with Hans Rey and his Wheels 4 Life charity, and our experience working with him is the inspiration behind this initiative. Crankbrothers for Others takes this spirit of giving back to a whole new level by partnering with more than 25 of our top athletes to support a variety of charities worldwide.

Participating athletes span the disciplines of downhill, enduro, cross country, and cyclocross, and include racers Greg Minnaar, Steve Peat, Danny Hart, Steve Smith, Loic Bruni, Brook Macdonald, Emmeline Ragot, Bryn Atkinson, Jill Kintner, Iago Garay, George Brannigan, Laurie Greenland, Greg Williamson, Curtis Keene, Anneke Beerten, Cedric Gracia, Adam Craig, Carl Decker, Jeremy Powers, Rebecca Rusch, Chloe Woodruff, the Bianchi XC Team, and the Topeak-Ergon EU and US XC Marathon teams.

Athletes show their support by wearing the crankbrothers temporary tattoo at races and using the hashtag #cb4others to help raise funds and awareness for the charity of their choice. For each race, crankbrothers makes a donation to the charity on the their behalf, and also partners with the athletes to raise additional donations through raffles and auction items. A microsite at crankbrothers.com/for-others hosts donation pages for each athlete and charity, and provides real-time updates of the funds raised.

Charities include World Bicycle Relief, NICA, Ride For Michael, Wheels 4 Life, Prochorus Community Development, Riding Forward, JAM Fund, Team Rynkeby, Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition, and the Ride to Conquer Cancer, among others.

Professional athletes make their living riding bikes,” said Claire Geiger, Grassroots Development Manager, World Bicycle Relief. “But for many individuals around the world, a bicycle is a life-changing tool, providing access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. The Crankbrothers for Others program gives professional athletes the perfect platform to use their voices and talent to support a cause bigger than themselves.

Danny Hart and crankbrothers have partnered in the crankbrothers for others program to help raise funds and awareness for Ride for Michael . At each race throughout the season Danny wears the cb tattoo in support of the program and crankbrothers makes a 100 donation to Ride for Michael on his behalf. We encourage you to pitch in and donate to help Michael to complete the next stage on his journey.

For many years I've connected in some way with World Bicycle Relief through my sponsors and I've always loved what they stand for,” said Anneke Beerten. “Now I have the opportunity to contribute myself through the Crankbrothers for Others program. It’s a great opportunity to make a difference and help support the community that has given us so much.

“Giving back has always been an important part of our business practices,”

Sounds great, but maybe making stuff that is reliable can also be an important part of your business practices. Just sayin'.

Sounds like you have had a bad experience, I personally love and continue to use every crankbrothers product I have ever bought

I'm going out on a limb here, but I think we've all had a bad experience in one form or another. I've had several myself. I'm not sure how they stay in business but I'm glad they are giving back nonetheless.

I like this idea, my only question is what happens when a part breaks or they have an issue with the bike and they live somewhere where there is no bike shop for hundreds of miles? How are they going to fix the bike? We should all start a charity that sends all of our "old" parts that have been phased out by boost and differant wheel sizes ;-)

 Fantastic idea!!

The problem with that kind of hand me downs is that it can easily kill/prevent development of local markets; the case of 2nd hand clothes to Africa is well known.

Great idea mate. How can we get this started?

Lets send them the Boost & 650B bullshit instead. Smile

"World Bicycle Relief has developed a Field Mechanics Training Program to accompany distribution. Mechanics are trained in bicycle assembly, maintenance and repair as well as basic business, marketing and management skills. Each trained mechanic receives a bike, a set of high quality tools, a uniform, and basic marketing materials; some mechanics work with microlenders to establish businesses and purchase a stock of spare parts. World Bicycle Relief has trained over 900 local field mechanics in Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe."

Also having been to Sub Saharan Africa twice myself I can tell you that there are people in most towns and villages who can carry out basic repairs. I was actually really impressed with a lot of the ingenuity I saw when the correct spare part was not available etc. So "living somewhere where there is no bike shop for hundreds of miles" is a situation very few, if any, of the people these charities give bikes to are in Salute

Maybe they can partner with top component manufactures to make bike parts that don't fail after one ride.

 More details please.

What more details would you like @xCri?
  • 2 0
 The specifics I guess.
It's a great idea, to help the world ride bicycles.
But how much, and in which way are we helping?

each athlete involved has their own donation profile page here: www.crankbrothers.com/for-others where the page can be shared and donations can be made.
Also, each time one of our athletes wears the tattoo at a race and snaps a shot and uses the #cb4others tag, we will donate $100 to the charity of choice for that athlete. We are encouraging each athlete to share their page and help raise outside donations as well.
The end help will be all the money that is raised and donated to the different charities.

I guess I wonder what the athletes donate.

Do they really have to draw their riders' legs?
