The snow is melting in most places and some folks have already been pinning it in others, so we want to tell you about our new 2009 Downhill Race Team. The team is all new for this race season and there's even been a few shifts in the sponsorship ranks as well. We're super stoked on the whole set up and are looking forward to getting the race season underway.
Learn more about our racers and sponsors inside...This year we took a step back and reduced our DH team to 3.5 riders in order to better focus on them as riders and their needs to be competitive this season as well as to be able to better represent all their sponsors in a more thorough manner.
Here are our 3.5 factory downhill riders for the 2009 season:
Kyle Marshall:Last season Kyle raced up a category as a Junior and was second overall in BC Cup standings. Since he was too young to race Junior at the UCI races like Canada Cups, he had to sit those out, but is more than ready for his first season as a Junior Expert. At 6'2" and 190lbs we expect to see him do some crushing this year on his new Devinci Wilson.
Trenton Zoobkoff:Trenton hails from Castlegar in the Kootenays and likes to hang it out in the rough stuff. 2nd overall in the Canada Cup series for 2008 as a Junior Expert, making the Canadian National Team for world champs and being named the 2008 BC Cyclist of the year for Downhill Men are all at the top of his accomplishments from last season. At 6'2" and on a new race bike and team, we expect to see great things from the Kootenay boy this season.
Darryl Bartlett:When it came to pick a captain to lead our juniors and show them the proper way to do things this season and in the future, we turned to Darryl to be that guy. Darryl's dedication to the sport, as a racer (Elite for 2009), a trail builder and a mentor, was exactly what our new team needed. Look for Darryl, the team trailer and some fun freelap races in the pits at all the B.C. Cups and select Canada Cups this season.
Derek Chambers:No Pinkbike team could be complete though without Derek Chambers as he's been with us for the past 4 years and will be returning as our alumni this season. Derek will continue to travel all over the place making us all jealous of the life style that only he is able to lead. Derek's stories from the road have become a Pinkbike tradition and we look forward to learning where all he goes and what all he does this season on board his Wilson. Get 'er done buddy!
They will be representing us at the Sea Otter Classic, Island Cup Races, B.C. Cup Races, Fluidride Cups, Canada Cups and select World Cup Events. Expect to see the Pinkbike / Devinci trailer at most Western Canadian events too. Their list of great sponsors that are backing their podium pursuits is as follows:
Devinci Bikes- The DH team will be piloting custom spec'd Devinci Wilson DH bikes. The Wilson is hand made in Quebec and has already proven itself as a true contender under our 2008 team and we're very excited to have the team ripping on them again this year. They will be training on Devinci Hectik 2 all mountain bikes and Devinci District SS hard tails when they are not pinning DH tracks.
SRAM- SRAM, Truvativ, Avid and RockShox will be covering all the shifting, braking, drive train and suspension duties on all team bikes this season. We're very excited about this new partnership and all that they bring to the bikes to keep the team rolling fast and smooth over the bumps.
DT Swiss- Long term team sponsor DT Swiss is back again keeping all the bikes rolling fast on their FR2350 wheelsets for DH and the E2200 wheelsets on their All Mountain and DJ bikes.
Troy Lee Designs Canada- Nothing says fast better than TLD clothing and race kits. Expect to see our racers looking fast in the new race kits and helmets.
WTB- All team bikes will be equip'd with WTB Devo, Silverado and Jaxon V saddles.
ODI- When you are racing DH, there are no other options but to have lock on grips and no one does it better than ODI. All team bikes will will running ODI lock on grips.
Straitline- New to the team for 2009 is Straitline pedals. Straitline is making some of the most sought after flat pedals on the market and our DH team will be running them on their Wilsons and District SS bikes.
Gamut USA- Also new to the program this season is Gamut USA and with them they bring their P series chain guides. Expect to see some custom Pinkbike guides on races courses near you this season!
We here at Pinkbike.com are very excited about our new downhill team and all that 2009 will bring to them on and off the race courses. Have a great season team!
