Working together to create sustainable trail is an important goal of Coeur d Alene Enduro.

PRESS RELEASE: Coeur d'Alene Enduro

As Coeur d'Alene Enduro continues its efforts toward delivering an epic race experience, we've been working tirelessly to build and maintain trails, line up support from local and national sponsors, and create anticipation for the first ever enduro mountain bike race in our beautiful town.

Riders from the Coeur d Alene area participate in the weekly Wednesday Night Bikes Brews and Burgers ride. Post ride beers and free burgers every week

Since joining forces with the United States Forest Service, we've hosted several work parties that have made huge improvements in the sustainability of our local trail system, Canfield Mountain. We've been amazed and gratified by the amount of support we've received from the mountain bike community, our fellow area bike shops, and the partners who have been instrumental in many of our cycling events in the past. Local sponsors Physio One, Mountain West Bank, Mountain Cafe and Catering, and Coyle & Wytychak Law have all helped fund the tools we use for trail work, and have even put shovels in the ground themselves!

Local businesses Physio One Mountain Cafe Vertical Earth and Coeur d Alene Bike Co. work as one unit on Cave trail on Canfield Mountain.

Shimano North America has signed on as our title sponsor, and they will be providing mechanical support during the race weekend as well as an array of prizes, such as the all-new Shimano XT Quad Piston Brakes, and other components designed to hold up to the high-performance demands of enduro racers.

Canfield Mountain is only a few miles from the center of Coeur d'Alene, but riding the trails feels like a backcountry adventure. Racers can expect around 6000' of descending over the race weekend, sampling the best of inland northwest singletrack.

A camp-style dinner for the racers, volunteers, and sponsors will be made on-site by Mountain Cafe and Catering, as owner and avid rider Matt Lazarus joins the fun to man the barbecue on Saturday night. After the feast, we'll have a bonfire with beverages, and general shenanigans to get everyone fired up for Day 2.

Hike a bike may be a thing at the inaugural Coeur d Alene Enduro. Sometimes you gotta hike to get the goods.

Between now and race day, we'll keep moving forward with our trail advocacy and community involvement.

The race is scheduled for July 7th and 8th in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Be sure to register at http://www.cdaenduro.com as registration is limited to 200 racers! Maintain the stoke!

We can't thank all of our sponsors that have dedicated time, money, and hard work in order to make this race possible! Thank you all!

Sponsors for the Coeur d Alene Enduro. Bike industry and CDA local business combine to create a great sponsor field

This is going to be such a rad event. If your in town, definitely stop by Coeur D' Alene Bike Co. and snag a beer at the Post Ride Bar connected to the shop. Great group of dudes that truly support the CDA area!

Alright, let's start with the negative......I hope you guys are doing a lot of work up there. Canfield mountain is not a great place to ride. It's really a motorbike trails system, which is maintained by the motorbike club/group. The first time I rode on Canfield, my wife asked me how it was. I told her that if all mountain bike trails were like those on Canfield, I would give up mountain biking. We moved from a smaller Idaho community that had a good MTB club that worked on maintaining and building trails. CDA does not have this type of organization, which is surprising given the number of MTB shops. I'm not trying to be overly harsh, but the truth is that the trails in the CDA area kind of suck compared to Beacon Hill in Spokane (35 miles away). If Beacon Hill was twenty miles closer to CDA, no one would be riding Canfield. And despite its distance away, I prefer riding Beacon; as do the people I ride with. Hopefully, the CDA enduro will not end up being an embarrassment to the community.

The positive side is that hopefully, people are getting organized and building some actual MTB trails, rather than just using the Moto trails, that really belong to the Moto riders that maintain Canfield mountain. And I hope we aren't trying to poach the trails that the Moto guys built and maintain, that's not cool either. How would MTB riders feel if trails they built and maintained were designated as hiking-only trails..... Hopefully, I'm wrong on all accounts.

Congrats on the endeavor, and best of luck!

@dkot: You are clearly wrong on all accounts, lol.

@dkot: Canfield is not like Beacon, true. But just because it's not your cup of tea, doesn't mean it's not an amazing place to ride. The Canfield trail system is awesome, and getting better all the time. There's a ton of great trail there, and it's a perfect system for a high quality enduro. Lots of long the descents, tons of technical stuff, and more steeps than most of the trail systems in our area.

Also, I see people in the photos that are part of at least two local bike shops. They are organizing, and working on improving the trails with the support of the Forest Service and the local dirt bike trail association. It seems mean spirited and close-minded do not support this group building trail right in your backyard. Beacon is great, but there is a whole lot of fantastic riding in our area. Canfield is a trail system that everyone should check out.

@willygfresh: I agree, that my comment might come across as a little mean-spirited. But that's really what I think; I'm just being objective. If the only opinion we listen to are those that are positive, then progress is unlikely to take place. I value positivity, but I also value objectivity over group-think. My opinion is just one of many. And being open-minded is valuing the unique perspective of others, even when we do not agree with them.

I'm glad people are getting organized and working on the trails. And again, I wish you guys all the best.

@Thustlewhumber: I hope I am wrong. Canfield has a lot of potential. All the best on trails building and upcoming event.

@dkot: Dude, you literally just created a troll account just to bash a trail you don’t have a clue about. You clearly have no idea about who maintains what trails, what a multiuse trail is, or even how to ride a bike. Delete yourself.
  • 3 0
@dkot: if you're open minded and objective, you should come ride Canfield or the Beauty Bay area with us. It seems that you haven't had a chance to ride some of the best trails in the region.
  • 1 2
@Thustlewhumber: I apologize if I'm coming across as a troll, that's not my intention. I really do hope that the trails get better on Canfield. I appreciate how passionate you are about Canfield, and can see that you are dedicated to making it a great place to ride. I am assuming that you are also a very competent rider. I'm not trying to tear anybody down......none of my comments are meant to be personal. I don't know any of you personally, so why would I say something mean to any of you. I'm just expressing my opinion based on my experience. I appreciate your passion and drive, I wish you all the best.

Please be nice to people on a personal level even though you disagree with them on an opinion level. I actually did try to delete the reply and my account after I posted my comment, but pinkbike won't allow you delete replies or your account (you can only delete comments). I was afraid that people would react this way, which is kind of disappointing. It would be nice if instead of lashing out at someone who says something negative, we just respect their opinion and moved on, or just agreed to disagree. My comment was provocative, but we all have our own agency and freedom to choose how we react to others opinions.

I'm pretty sure you are all really nice people, so please be nice online too.

@willygfresh: Cool, thank you for the invite. That's super nice of you; although, it's probably best that you never know who I am. I think Thustlewhumber's mind is made up about me, and he might squash me. I have ridden the Beauty Bay trails a number of times, and they are great trails, no disagreements there. But I still disagree (respectfully) with regards to Canfield. I will have to go check them out again since they have been worked on. Just out of curiosity, which trails have been worked on, so that I can go check them out.

All the best.

@dkot: I think we know each other, and believe you made some similar statements through your normal account on previous posts about this. Bums me out that someone would publicly trash on a whole area because its not how they like to ride.
  • 2 0
@dkot: "Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

You can't just come in here and insult the trail, the trailbuilders, the event organizers, and CDA in general just because you don't know what you are doing. And do it all on a fake account? You need to be called out on it.
  • 2 0
@dkot: So here is what I will say: Come to the Wednesday night ride at 6pm. Ride Canfield with the CDA Bike Co. and the other 50-80 people that show up so you can remain anonymous. After the ride, if you still feel like we are all crazy for liking this place so much, I will publicly apologize to you and buy you a beer at Post Ride.

BUT! - if you have even a glimpse of how incredibly awesome Canfield Mountain is, you need to come back here and apologize to everyone for unnecessarily trying to undermine what Alex and the crew are doing. I won't make you sign up for the Enduro, but I am sure you will want to after the ride because it really is that good of a trail system.

@Thustlewhumber: I'm not insulting any person, I'm just insulting the trails.:-), that's all. I think I'm a reasonable person. If you could tell me what trails to ride, I'll go ride them, I've been up there quite a few times, so I know my way around. I'll go ride the trails you've suggested and then come back and defend or rescind my opinion. That should be fair. And if you want to meet me in-person sometime, I might be willing to do so in a public area......with plenty of witnesses :-).

Alright, now that that's over with, what trails should I ride?
  • 1 0
 @willygfresh:

Again, I'm not attacking anyone personally, I respect your opinion, I just have a different one.

I really want to go ride the trails you guys have been working on, and then hopefully eat crow. That would be great. It would be nice to have some really good trails nearby. But, If you don't tell me which trails to ride, its kind of like saying you really haven't been working on much up there.

So, what trails have you been working on? I will go ride some of them this week. Give me the top two or three you've been working on, that should be pretty manageable for me to ride in the next couple of days.
  • 2 0
@dkot: I don't know what they've been working on, ask the organizers Tim.
  • 1 0
@willygfresh: All best on the event, I hope it is a success. Hopefully, a permanent trail building club will come about. I apologize for being a Troll......although, using this analogy would make Thustlewhumber a Bergen (you know, from the movie Trolls::-).

Take care.

@dkot: haha, have a good ride today. The Enduro will be rad, the trail building group is off to a great start, and everything is good.

 @dkot:

The trail association has been around awhile now and has quietly been working away at providing trail maintenance throughout the CDA River Ranger District. As for which trails have been worked on...A from Penn to Cave.
  • 1 0
@Visicypher: Awesome, I rode Cave the other day and it's pretty good. I can definitely see the work you guys have done. Keep it up!

Looking good crew! Canfield has so much raw and rough trail, and that dinner from Matt at Mountain Cafe is going to be amazeballs! The work at Canfield is going to be awesome too, something that benefits everyone. The Inland NW riding scene is getting so rad right now.
