Victoria on Vancouver Island is the capital of British Columbia and also a hot spot for Mountain Biking. Dean Tennant told me about some of the slab trails down there so here we are with a super fun loop on Hartland.

Shhhhh, everyone knows that Victoria only has XC trails.

Hard to believe Hind grinder has been there for well over 20yrs. Classic.

It may be called Hind Grinder now, but it's actual original name was Grinder. The entrance was off the original Breathless and you had to hike and bike across the hill to get to the original entrance which was a high up large log that had to be ridden across a chasm.

@bansheeridermike: Correct on the old traverse and log crossing, but when I rode it the first time in 98 I was told it was called Hind Grinder. Over the years I heard it shortened to Grinder. I was actually happy to hear Dean call it the original name.

@bondomonga: Yes I remember the old log crossing! I think even the original name was longer, I believe it was "Captain Hindgrinder's Highway" , then Hindgrinders then just Grinder lately. It's a legendary trail that I'm glad continues to evolve and be fun.

@dean: I used to ride with the dude who cut it in and have watched its namesake porn vid as well - I’m pretty sure you’re correct on this one.

Whoa, some serious technical sketch. The pros are really good. Can't believe Remy is riding this blind and picking his own lines on the fly.

I was fortunate to learn how to ride on Hartland trails. The trails are techy and tight. If you can flow there you’re in good shape to ride anywhere.

Fun to see how pros ride our local trails. I definitely do things differently Wink .

I rode Sofa King this week and it’s now pretty easy - downgraded from black to blue, but a super fun trail to ride!

Remy, thanks for coming to the south island and showing our trails and local talent. It really helps fire the stoke for what we've got.

Riding Grinder blind like that is impressive. Riding Outlaw period is insane.

Looks like a bit of Outlaw there - that is a crazy trail - made it look so easy.

Sofa King used to scare the absolute shit outta me way back when

For better or worse, it's now a flow trail. Nothing like how it was 'back in the day.' Which is fine! The builders and trail crew did an excellent job reinventing the trail.

@sancho-ramerez: I was talking with a younger guy who lives out on the Island and mentioned it to him, the way he talked about the trail had me feeling like it had been drastically changed since I last saw it around 2010. This certainly explains why it seemed like he was talking about a totally different trail. Those lips they had back then were scary, we would hike our DH bikes around the dump to ride.

One thing Victoria always has a good supply of is rocks and arbutus (Madrona) trees

Those Hartland trails beat me and my ol' GT XCR4000 up something fierce years back. Great lines tucked away up there.
