It has been a wet and muddy one at Crankworx Les Gets so far... But that’s not a bad thing, especially if you're Vincent Tupin and Kristof Lenssens who headed out for a few rad laps in the slop.
That vid nails the job of summarizing the conditions here in Les Wets. I'm gonna put it out there and predict that the slope style and speed and style will not take place. The DH will go ahead and will be the loosest sloppiest event ever seen. The pump track may take place if we get a break in the weather. The whole track has been under plastic all week so it might be ok.
I'm kinda jealous. Riding in mud is hilarious, but as soon as a raindrop falls around here they close the trails. I mean I can see why, of course--but still, real question... how the heck do people practice for wet weather races?
@mountaincross - choose a bike designed in the UK, or one designed for moist conditions. I've seen a few non UK bikes with very little tyre clearance for example. Small amount of mud and your grinding your frame away. Salsa is one example of that.
Also a lot of products that just cant deal with water / dirt ingress. i.e.. most of Crank Bros stuff and E13 hubs to name a few.
Serious question for the Brits (and anyone else who rides in mud more often than not): What are the best bikes for these conditions (DH, FR, AMTN)? Thinking in terms of wet conditions reliability, ease of service, mud clearance, etc...
Please offer at least a few suggestions of bikes available in the USA...
@mountaincross: the less pivots the better..... if you need to replace lots of bearings with the regularity of british riders it adds up in both time and money! mind you that doesnt stop us buying all the usual suspects and putting up with the extra servicing.....
@mountaincross: agro hardtails are widely used as the winter weapon of choice and since there are relatively few uplift access trails, 120-160mm full suss bikes are often used I the summer

I actually don’t like riding roots that much!....nevermind
