PRESS RELEASE: Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Stewardship and Santa Cruz Bicycles

Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Stewardship and Santa Cruz Bicycles are teaming up to raise funds for local trail stewardship and give away a 5010 CC mountain bike worth over $10,000 to one lucky winner.

SANTA CRUZ, CALIF. – Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Stewardship (SCMTS), a 501(c)(3) trail stewardship organization, today announced its new three-week “Support Trails and Win a Santa Cruz” sweepstakes. This year, the nonprofit teamed up with the folks at Santa Cruz Bicycles to give away one 5010 CC X01 AXS RSV mountain bike worth $10,649 USD to raise funds for local trail stewardship and maintenance throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains region. This fundraiser will directly support SCMTS’ Timeless Trails work, including 19 miles of new trail at Cotoni-Coast Dairies, fire relief on trails throughout Big Basin State Park, and inclusivity-focused volunteer trail work programs and events. The giveaway closes on Friday, October 28 at 11:59 p.m. PST. Interested parties can enter to win here.

Santa Cruz Bicycles and the company’s PayDirt fund have long supported SCMTS. The partnership has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars to fuel new local trails and pump tracks, including Sawpit Trail reroute in Soquel Demonstration State Forest (opened in 2020) and the Westside Pump Track (opened in 2021) right in front of the Santa Cruz Bicycles HQ.

SCMTS has set a fundraising goal of $75,000 for this campaign. All contributions will support the nonprofit’s efforts to:
- Build and open 19 miles of trail at Cotoni-Coast Dairies Unit of the California Coastal National Monument just north of the City of Santa Cruz
- Restore and rebuild trails throughout Big Basin State Park following the devastating wildfires of 2020
- Introduce more–and more diverse–community members to trail stewardship and the magic of the outdoors with fun volunteer events and educational programs

“Each year, our team looks forward to giving away a Santa Cruz bike because not only do we get to stoke someone out with a sweet new ride, we also raise significant funds that keep our crew’s shovels in the dirt bringing our community new trails and maintaining old favorites.” said Matt De Young, Executive Director of SCMTS. “We are so grateful to our supporters who step up to support trails during this giveaway. Everyone’s a winner whether you win the bike or get to enjoy A+ trails!”
“SCMTS is taking on some of the most exciting trail projects that Santa Cruz has ever seen, and we can’t wait to see them transform outdoor access in our own backyard,” said Katie Zaffke of PayDirt. “We’re proud to support them, and hope that anyone who’s ready for a bike upgrade takes this opportunity to do some good with their dollars. I’ve personally seen the trails they’re building, so believe me when I say that you definitely will want to help get them fully funded.”

Santa Cruz Bicycles calls its all-new 5010 “the best-handling trail bike of all time”. It’s built for fun, and is an ideal steed for both the varied terrain of SCMTS’ trails in the Santa Cruz region and a few post-ride pump track laps. Ride, jib… do it all on a 5010. Through this giveaway, one lucky winner will come home with a 5010 CC in Santa Cruz’s Matte Nickel colorway, fully kitted with AXS remote drivetrain and carbon Reserve wheels.

Honestly where does all the money to SCMTS go? I donated for a long time, and see almost no development of the trail systems for MTB. Emma has been unchanged for years. Flow is in a constant state of disrepair. New trails programs are boring multi use snoozers. Santa Cruz is touted as the Mecca of MTB in California, but 90% of what people are actually riding is illegal, because that's what's actually built, and what's actually fun.

It's insane that there is not a pay to access bike park like legacy or Santa's Village in the greater bay area region. With the power of the Sierra Club and liability laws in CA I don't really blame SCMTS for not getting more technical trails built. The only way we will get them is through a for profit bike park IMO and companies like Santa Cruz, Specialized, and Fox need to get together and get it done.

@braap299: I remember a decade or so ago there was a plan for one in Mt. Hermon. It wasn't going to be anything huge, but similar to Cunningham or Truckee bike park. Saw it as squashed though.

100% agree. SC has the goods, only problem is none of it is legal and has nothing to do with SCMTS/MBOSC. They build paved pump tracks and walking trails these days, so I stopped giving them $$. I'd rather donate time and $$ to the builders doing the bootleg stuff. Go look at Bellingham/WMBC if you want a model for how it's done right. Go ride Galby and then Demo. Enough said.

@Dmaxwell: ahh right. I prefer it that way. Soon the plebs will also have the Coastal Dairies trails to ride at though.

@norcalbike: yes its good for the fact they dont get overrun w/ rookies... but sucks for the fact maintenance isnt the greatest... and takes a long time to find new stuff... :\
