Yeah dudes, front chainring/bashguard is a must moving forward! Doesn't seem like a common thing for the chain to come off and then the sprocket to chew a hole in you this size, but take it from me & my experience, you don't wanna go thru this!!  every time i see a front chainring with nothing covering it in any way, i picture an injury like this. it's like having a saw blade an inch away from your calf! i hope full recovery comes and you're back on your bike soon.
