Is this that crazy alluminium low temp weld filler?
  • 1 0
Yup, Durafix, melts at 398°C, hard to work with on a round tube, it just drips if you're not careful. Big Grin

@brigand: rad... I have a line on a sick DH frame thats cracked for dirt cheap and was wondering if this may be a wicked fix

@sterlingmagnum: building it after the work today, can't wait for the test ride Smile

@brigand: right on! Let me know how it goes

@sterlingmagnum: Well, it works, hasn't made a noise yet despite my not so good work Smile Great thing is if it cracks i can reheat it and solder it again!!! Big Grin

@brigand: It works alright, it just takes a bit of practice to do it well enough.

Magura Smile

@Mr-Magura: looks like i'll be having more practice, it cracked againm need to figure out how to keep it in one place, it just drips down or to the other side.

@brigand: Smaller torch, and turn the work piece as you go, so the melt bath is always at the top.

@Mr-Magura: It works this way: i heat the frame to cca 400°C and then melt the rod by the frame temperature. I think i did it right the first time but then went on to "fix it". The torch has to be big, small one can't heat up the frame to the required temp.

@brigand: Nope, been doing that stuff for a while back like 20 years ago.
You want to only melt it locally, or it will run and drip and what not.
Heating the frame up by other means to like 50C below the melting point, then using the torch to go up to the melting point locally.
If done right, you can use it like regular welding.

@Mr-Magura: aha, going to try that, alu looses temperature very fast, it's a big chunk! Smile

Oh cool, did it work man?
  • 1 0
No, but it will, going to make a small gusset to keep it where it needs to be and to prevent it from dripping off Smile

 @brigand: That should be good!
