One confused bike: I needed a bike for the new indoor bike park. Having too many bikes already (is there such thing?) I decided to try to convert my trail bike into something more "park-like".

The single speed setup isn't going to work with that tensioner. You need a dual-pulley set up in order to maintain tension with a non concentric bottom bracket suspension design.

Yeah, that's what I heard too, but I got this setup for super cheap so I thought I'd give it a whirl first before I spent any more money. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Btw, how come the single pulley design won't work? I've moved the rear triangle through it's full travel and it seems to be ok. Have yet to test it in the real world though.

Think about it. The reason a concentric BB design works (i.e. Cove Hooker and Cowan DS) is because the distance between the axle and the BB remains the same no matter where the rear suspension is in its travel. Suspension compression on other frames either results in the axle ending up closer to or further away from the BB, changing the tension on the chain.

Yes, I've accounted for chain-growth. When the suspension is fully compressed, the distance from the BB to the rear axle is longer, but the spring-loaded chain tensioner automatically adjusts (and moves closer to the chainstay). My only concern is whether or not the spring in the tensioner is strong enough to provide enough tension. Guess I'll have to wait till the weekend to see if my theory holds up Smile

It usually isn't strong enough in my experience. Paul components has a dual-pulley tensioner called the Melvin that works really well, or you could just use an old derailleur.
