damn right...they have capacity for building 1000 bikes PER DAY!!

the next scheme for the hire bikes is Washington, USA

London is also going to get MANY more hire bikes over the next year or two...Mayor Boris is talking about £81 million investment to expand the scheme, which has only been running over a week...

you will not be able to remove the wheels with a special tool, as they have security fittings to stop theft

Serco (the company running the hire scheme in London) does all the maintenance

you would be unlucky to get a puncture - they have used DH inner tubes and very heavy duty tires to minimize punctures whilst riding

if you have a problem with your hire bike, you push a "repair" button on the docking station and they send out a mechanic to come fix it

in Paris, riders turn the seat around to show other users that the particular bike is broken

no- its £140 million of tax money with Barclays Bank paying £25 million in sponsorship

however, when you cost in the benefits to London in terms of increasing the citizens fitness levels from riding hire bikes (less cost to National Health Service), and the improved efficiency of public transport by the introduction of an additional transport system to supplement the tube, bus, rail, then the costs make more sense!

not neccesserilly, because not everyone is capable of riding bikes, and some people are too lazy or cannot be bothered to ride a bike, finding the use of a car much easier, and if they travel long distance, a bike is unsuitable, so that point may not be 100% valid. Plus just because there are bikes there available to hire, some people may find it cheaper and quicker to drive, and people would rather drive than bike in the rain too!

tried driving in London = total nightmare

you sit in a traffic jam for hours, going no-where fast, and paying top dollar for that privilege!

I think London is to be avoided at all costs. Driving is a nightmare, but riding a bike there is suicide, when the traffic does move it's like a massive free for all, and most of the drivers in London are foreigners who haven't got a clue.

there are 10,000s of riders using bikes in London every day without any major problem if you are competent on a bike, and ride defensively, you should not have any real problems

I wonder who does the maintenance on these bikes? And what if you get a puncture, are you expected to fix it yourself?

I wondered this. PLUS - those rear wheels look a pain to get out!

Here in Brazil these bikes would be stoled in the first day.
