Finally got it to work. Still some kinks to work out, but it should go into business next film shoot. Entirely handbuilt from my own design (same as every other crane design though). External preview monitor is a Glidecam L7-Pro.

Dude, honestly, you're better off investing in one of these (unless you're doing a DJ video, that thing would be awkward to use in the woods):

Watch at 1:12 in vimeo.com/14400599 , that video won't be up for long so if it doesn't work then that means I took it down.

"Dude, honestly..." wow I'm sorry I didn't mean to sound so blunt, I really meant it in a positive way. But I know first hand that wobbly jibs really make footage painful to watch = distracting, but I have no idea, it could be relatively smooth for all I know. But the glidecam I suggested is a must, even though it does have a steep learning curve.

The crane is OK on stability even now, but I'm in the process of reinforcing it. Why should I get the glidecam thing?

You can basically be sprinting and the camera shot would not move. You know 'steadicams' right? You can turn yourself into a human dolly!

Oh, OK, I thought that you were thinking it would have some use with the crane. Yeah, I wanna get one of those pretty bad...IDK it might happen at some point.

Oh MASSIVE LOL you must've thought I was suggesting you put the glidecam on the end of the arm. I LOVE mine, I just hardly see anyone using them, if they've even heard of smaller glidecam systems.

I built a boom as well... and I think the flex is actually good. A rigid boom will just sent shockwaves through the whole arm to the camera causing it to show a bump, yet flex will soften a bump, like suspension.

This was shot on a boom made of 15mm square steel bar attached to a steel bracket and a bucket as a counterweight...

I then built this

I'm deffo gonna rebuild this one though, there's too much side-to-side wobble. With the money coming in soon from our last gig, I think I'm gonna gun for a 12' boom with hollow square aluminum tubing...gotta see what the deflection is though on different thicknesses...

For stability, remember there is stregnth it triangles.
  • 1 0
Yup, good point. However, to maintain the auto-leveling abilities, you need to use a parallelogram shape, and a triangle would immediately lock it up. But good point, it has uses in other ways on this design for sure.

Thanks. You could put steel rods in the v of your aluminum to stiffen it up.

Yeah, I was gonna just double up the stuff I have (you can slide it in with the other one). I'll post a test vid tonight I think.

glidecams are pretty hard to use and they can get really heavy but if you use them right it looks really good

 looks a little bendy
  • 1 0
It is. I won't be too hard to reinforce though, but even still it's like impossible to make one that doesn't bend out of any material that doesn't require machining or casting. I can't even get close to bending 4 feet of this stuff myself but when you hang 2 or 3 lbs off the end of 9 feet of it it bends for sure.

you should check out the square channel alum you can get at home depot or lowes
  • 1 0
The stuff I'm using is a lot stronger.

i have a hard tme beleiving tht
  • 1 0
It's kinda like channel aluminum doubled up on itself with even more creases and it's like 2x thicker than most of the stuff you could get. It's actually rip-cut from aluminum decking material, so it didn't cost me anything...otherwise it could have been $200+

yeah, i used square alum. tubing on my jib crane, same thing at 15 ft putting a few pounds on the end of that its still gonna have a little bendage

Well, I'll see what happens when I do the new one...I have a pretty good design of what I want...

Im re-designing mine as well, Im going to go with a 4 rail system since Im shooting on a 7D now and it weighs alot more than my old prosumer camera. This is where I got the idea for mine, it may be helpful to you as well.

Yeah, I was gonna go with something like that. Same vertical strength but more torsional stability...
