More grip this way, but it's down to what conditions you ride. I ride more loam that's you'll never hook up in, and otherwise it's a mix of thin layered mud, thick sloppy mud or loose, greasy hardpack in winter. So smaller spikes will cut through just the same but grip better as they don't fold under cornering.
