The shock was mounted that way as the shock linkage (the white part) would come in contact with the shock's presta valve.

 Sold the AC, say it aint so! Ha, I actually sold mine last year but I miss it so much I am buying another one and building it back up. That makes since about the shock, just never ran into that before. Do you know what year your frame was? Was that an AC that has a 1.5 head tube?

 I believe the frame was a 2002 with a 1 1/8th head tube.

 @mattjames182. I like the way you roll. Funny thing is, I use to own a Schwinn 4 Banger as well. It was orange was and stolen out of a buddies house. I painted the AC orange as an homage to the 4 Banger.
