Why do you have a grip lock-ring beside your brake clamp?

I like to keep my Saint at 8" from the end of my bars. I keep it kind of lose so when I bail or wreak then I can slide my brake right back to the same spot. Its nice when you have more then one bike that you ride it keeps the same feel on all of them. 31" bars or 29" bars the all have the same reach feel on the brake.
