, it happened whilst riding my first dh race 15 years ago, i had a staved thumb, V-brakes on a hardtail....needless to say i eventually lost grip on the bar/brake lever, and i missed a corner and front flipped the bike into the undergrowth, i stopped pretty quick...my face against a large boulder and no full face helmet (oddly the doctor reckoned i might have broken my neck if i was wearing a full face helmet, due to the added leverage)

my eyelid was shredded and had to be sewn up, and my zygomatic and supraorbital bones were shattered. this meant my eyeball dropped by about 5mm and thus meant i had double vision. this was fixed by re-breaking my face and re-setting the bones with titanium crews and plates. it took about a year to fully recover and back to perfect vision again

my metal plates make my right side of my face numb when its cold, and tingly when i am fighting hot fires at work.
when the operation was done they damaged a nerve just below my eye and i have permanent pins and needles in an area about 4cm x 4cm on that side of my face. i have had it that long now i dont really think about it unless i am talking about it or its really cold/fighting fires
