TBH I dunno how I found this either...bored at work I guess. I've only got a few things to add. First, if you drop or snap a chain, you'll be reaching for that brake lever. Second, if you can stop faster with skidding than with brakes, your brakes kinda suck. Third, brakeless makes sense with bmx and park bikes where brakes get in the way of tricks, or track racing where you don't want to suddenly stop and take out the rest of the field. But the 'zen' argument of riding brakelesss riding pretty road or just commuting is pretty weak. You know what makes you feel "one with the bike"? Skill and strong legs. I'm not saying I have either, but there it is.

theres also other ways to stop were i to drop/break a chain(dont happen, i change chains ever 2 months and check my wear religiously) Ive had to cram my foot in my back tire before( was dumb and decided it was a smart idea to ride with a loose lock ring, it popped off, cog un-threaded ahahah ) i see the arguments both ways. when im riding in-town i put the brake on, if im out on some country road i normally dont bother.

Hipstaaaa Thought the chain was a belt in the normal sized picture! Someone should invent a connectable carbon belt.. shouldn't be too hard!

 Sweet tup what gear ratio?

48-17/16(double fixed) getting a 49t chain ring asap. need more than 1 skid patch on 16t.

I'm going to have to ask what a skid patch is... Book

its the patch of tire that you would skid on(given that you norally skid at 9 and 3), which is related to what gearing you run. more skid patches means more equal tire wear. with one skid patch one spot on the tire would be bald while the rest would still be good.

heres the site i use to calculate it. pug in a ratio and then go to skid patch analysis. should be easier to grasp then.

or use brakes like a smart person, and use the tires for rolling on instead

i run a brake for when im commuting. more as an emergency counter measure. unless you have riden a Fixed gear bike on the road for a long length of time theres nothing i can tell you that will make you see riding a brakeless track bike like i do. riding fixed, and brakeless, does one better to a normal bike by making you one with the bike, you pedal the bike moves. stop pedaling and it stops easy as that. its the only bike where I can go out for 20 minutes - an hour and just listen to the tires on pavement. i can also slow down and stop faster than i could with a brake via slowing my cadence and do hop-skids. those crazzy long skids you see in any of the macaframa videos are more of a fun thing to do more than a practical one. To be perfectly honest im not sure how you even found this picture. unless you were browsing one of the Fixed gear threads or the kitchener-waterloo thread, which wouldnt make sense as it shows you living in nova scotia....
