How about one chainring with a chainguide made out of an old derailleur, some epoxy, and a dowel? Razz

I am surprised how there is a very small population of cross country/trail riding bikers there are on this site.

 Sadly?

How are you coming to that conclusion? With 10 speed you can easily do xc and trail without multiple chainrings!

but a lot of people ride both xc and dh especialy if you live in an area where there aren't alot shuttles or lifts

3 w/ no guide, 2 with guide, 2 without guide adds up to 1221 right now.
and if you figure in that a bunch of the 1 with chain guide/1 without guide are also on XC/AM bikes too, I think it's a majority

I'm a XC/trail rider and I have one ring up front with a guide.

well i think anyone could have guessed the out come of this but they really should specify DH only cus its the dirt jumpers or enduro riders or any other rider that technically could answer this that are going to mess it up... by the way im one of those guys Razz

Always use a chainguide! The worst crash I ever had happened when the chain jammed mid sprint, as everyone who's had that happen knows, over the bars I went. Ordered a guide as soon as I'd got out of hospital...

 What about... HAMMERSCHMIDT! ?

Got the Hammerschmidt too. So sick. Insane clearance, instant shifts under power, impossible to drop a chain. HAMMERSCHMIDT!!!

The problem with trying to figure out who's who on here is that so many different kinds of riders benefit from a the majority of these options. Obviously, anybody with a triple ring crankset is only riding XC or Trail, but every one of these setups has been used across more than one discipline. Especially after taking rider preference and varying terrain across the world into account.

 Single ring all the way

the new derailleurs with rolling clutch and such work pretty good at reducing chainslap and chain loss.

What about 1 Chainring with no guide but chain tugs on the horizontal dropouts?

1x10 with a clutch rear derailleur and without a chain guide is perfect for the cross country riding that I do in northern CA.

32t with guide in my xc bike, 34t with guide on my am bike, 36t with guide on my dh for me

That is exactly how I have everything set up. With 32-14 ratio on the single speed DJ bike

double crankset with a 40T big ring for the win.

What about tripple with a guide? (C-guide)
