How about one chainring with a chainguide made out of an old derailleur, some epoxy, and a dowel?

I am surprised how there is a very small population of cross country/trail riding bikers there are on this site.

How are you coming to that conclusion? With 10 speed you can easily do xc and trail without multiple chainrings!

but a lot of people ride both xc and dh especialy if you live in an area where there aren't alot shuttles or lifts

3 w/ no guide, 2 with guide, 2 without guide adds up to 1221 right now.
and if you figure in that a bunch of the 1 with chain guide/1 without guide are also on XC/AM bikes too, I think it's a majority

Got the Hammerschmidt too. So sick. Insane clearance, instant shifts under power, impossible to drop a chain. HAMMERSCHMIDT!!!

The problem with trying to figure out who's who on here is that so many different kinds of riders benefit from a the majority of these options. Obviously, anybody with a triple ring crankset is only riding XC or Trail, but every one of these setups has been used across more than one discipline. Especially after taking rider preference and varying terrain across the world into account.
