How do you feel about electric mountain bikes?

*not for me but I okay with others riding them provided they don't expect me stop and move off to the side of the trail so they can pass. This is especially irritating when I'm pushing hard on a steep section. This happens more often then it should!!!

Ps, you guys need to learn how to write survey questions!

My response, "I wouldn't ride one and would rather nobody did", is the result of the "either/or" option presented in the survey. My actual sentiment is more nuanced. I have no real grievance with eBikes at this time. However, I do foresee user conflicts in the not-too-distant future, as many who ride them are not at all considerate of other users. I have found my wife (an ex pro) and myself climbing exposed sections of trail or lined with PO, and had groups of eBikers (10+) go by with a casual "on your left" as they pass one after another in a train, just assuming that because one guy was let by all others have the space to pass, too. Many of these mass groups of eBikers are rather new to mtn biking and are not themselves very skilled, but with the power available make hazards of themselves — to themselves and others.

And the vast majority of eBike users are the types that do no trail work whatsoever (I know there are a few of you out there who do, but I am speaking of the vast majority of that market), and anecdotally none of my friends who ride eBikes lift a finger to dig. And this despite that fact that eBike users — because of the weight of the eBike and more still the increased number of times they can ride a given trail (lapping multiple times) — have a far greater impact on the trail. It also bugs me that eBikers ignore the prohibitions on certain trails where it actually makes good sense to keep them off. I am seeing degradation on some trails with heavy eBike use, and I think any objective observer would agree.

To be sure, I see eBiking as a good option for the elderly or recovering injured. I also see that they provide opportunities for exploration and even trail work. While my current sentiment when entering into eBike discussions is somewhat neutral, I have to say that for the reasons mentioned above, and a few others, I do see eBike technology as future problem, especially as the technology gets better, more battery logevity and more powerful motors. I think it's something the industry needs to get a handle on before problems become irreversible without draconian measures. Like all technologies, the tech itself is neutral, but the human propensity to abuse the power of technology is ever a perennial concern: hence my answer to the question.

There really should be something along the lines of: "I plan to get one as soon as I reasonably can". There's a bunch of us that have ridden them, either as a demo, or a buddy's, and we're sold.

I came to mountain bikes from Motocross. Years ago Motos were aggressively banned on the trail networks in th Ottawa/Gatineau region. This was an initiative led by who I call the Tilley Hats, they are the majority in my area. They care about Lichen and Turtles, deeply. A few weeks ago I ran into an EBiker on one of the "sensitive" trails. He had 30 km/h and was kicking debris six feet into the air. He passed a Tilley hat who I was carefully trying NOT to spook. The Tllley Hat lost his mind. They going to get us all screwed.

I like the idea of ebikes, but your average guy should not have one. They are good for older people or injured people who are recovering. This is at least with e mountain bikes.

How about I don't ride one and make fun of most people who do. Honestly, I'm really conflicted about them. I think it is great that people who couldn't otherwise go biking have an opportunity to do so with e-bikes. I also got my daughter an ebike because I knew that was the only way I would get her to join me on longer trail rides. On the other hand, I have some riding buddies that have switched to ebikes because they prefer to be fat and lazy, and I give them so much shit when we ride (in between gasps for air).
Locally, we are seeing significantly more trail erosion due to increased traffic, likely from an influx of new bikers on ebikes (my opinion, but based on observations). If it comes down to it, I would definitely throw ebikers under the bus instead of closing the trails for all bikes.

Where is the "I pre-ordered one a year ago and it still hasn't turned up" option?!

Where is the “I would buy one if they were allowed on my local trails” option?

I like the idea of riding them for big fun recovery days but can’t yet justify the price for that incremental value.

A motor is a motor. I have nothing against ebikes but I will ride my MX if I want to ride with a motor.
