@jejsd: I notice you live in the USA, where a company can sort of layoff their employees whitout much of a reason. Over here, to do such thing you would need very good reasons and the approval of them by unions and goverenement agencies. Offer employees a very reasonable compensation, help them find a new job etc. This didn't just pop into someones mind as the next best thing to do...
