Canyon Lux CF and Ultimate CF SLX Honoured with 2014 German Design Award

An eye catching design, that works! Once more the German bike manufacturer CANYON receives a design award for two of its bikes. The 2014 German Design Award jury, awarded the Lux CF and the Ultimate CF SLX in the category “Transportation and Public Space” with a “Special Mention” for their outstanding design quality. Thereby, the new 29” marathon race bike and the “racer of the year 2013” (Le Cycle) were two of the lucky winners out of over 1,900 high-quality submissions.

The Lux CF has remarkable lightweight qualities. Efficient and agile the new CANYON family member combines the best of the successful Grand Canyon CF SLX 29 marathon racer with the Nerve CF full carbon model to create a perfect, full suspension 29er marathon race bike. The centerpiece of the frame is the revolutionary Flex Pivot carbon rear triangle which has been specially adapted to the 100 mm spring travel and the required climbing properties of a 29er full suspension race bike. In contrast to the Nerve CF, however, the damper does not have a floating mount but is securely anchored in the frame. This saves even more weight and underlines the clear, fluid design. Thanks to its excellent anti-squat kinematics the Lux CF is drive-neutral on uphill sections and responds sensitively without penalties with control and safety when travelling downhill. Already, the Lux CF has helped Alban Lakata to his Leadville 100 victory with a record breaking time.


After its predescor won the reddot design award last year, the engineers and designers of the 2014 Ultimate CF SLX model had set themselves a tough goal – to revolutionize one of the best frame sets in the world, and yet again raise the bar for road bikes. And this goal was definitely achieved: The 790 gram lightweight frame is without a doubt one of the best carbon fibre frames and sets a new benchmark in its combination of design, stiffness, comfort and weight. Overall, this bike is clearly defined and its ground-breaking frame architecture gives it a cubic appearance. With a design that combines all these elements harmoniously, a road bike with a new form language was created. The Ultimate CF SLX is available in seven frame sizes, to match the rider perfectly. It offers the riders an innovative comfort and the ability to optimise their riding results.


The German Design Award is a premium international prize, which honours top-class products and projects as well as up and coming designers who are leading the way in the German and international design scene. The award “Special Mention” considers works, in which the design shows successfully aspects or solutions. The jury consists of design experts from different disciplines. Their evaluation is based on different criteria such as design quality, degree of innovation, brand value, functionality, ergonomics and environmental compatibility. CANYON’s two bikes convinced the jury with its pure design and state-of-the-art frame sets which in terms of weight and stiffness, take bike engineering to a new level.
