We've seen a lot of that over the past 27 years, haven't we? And now the XCO world champ is 4'11" tall, a shorter inseam than her wheels were tall. We were told by industry experts, and internet commenters, that 6 foot would be the bare minimum to be able to ride 29" at all, let alone enjoy it to be proficient. Then, bikes got heaps longer and tiny riders actually thrived on them.

You'll be going faster though, especially on technical climbs. The variance in fitness and skill between riders is a lot greater than between the wheel differences. I'm going to a larger cassette because I wasn't on the biggest size with 29".

@SickEdit: Perhaps it's a good thing that the brakes are not from the year 1999, then? If a pro wants a bigger rotor, I would think there are ways to get that? It may help a bit that the rear wheel is slightly more planted with that taller axles. In theory cornering speeds are a bit higher so there might be less braking to be done.

He's an absolute expert and has been focusing on this day all year. He got the bike 11 days before the race and 5 days before the race he decided to absolute race it. Imagine what that takes. His sponsor doesn't even sell the bike.
