Specialized Releases Alloy Levo R - Shaves $2,000 Off the Price Tag
@AndrewFleming:
This is just one product line - with fat profit margins - and we can't extrapolate that across their entire catalog. Their other lines likely have lower margins - their VERY competitively priced tires and helmets for instance, not to mention all the 'low end' commuter bikes that probably make up the volume of sales. You see this in all kinds of industries where halo products are high margin and the budget models are lower margin but sometimes make up for it with volume. Look at Fox forks for instance, the high end model likely doesn't cost a whole lot more than the base $800 model - but the price is double. Great business strategy.s
There are 2 kinds of profit margin: gross and net, seems I misunderstood the one you were referring to. For one specific product line, you'll typically reference the gross as net includes fixed costs. For the ebike product line, both the gross and net margins are likely quite high. For their entire catalog, it's probably sub 10% as you identified.

Industry Veteran Hans Rey Calls for Clearer E-Bike Definitions in Open Letter to the Bicycle Industry
@Dougal-SC: Nominal is typically defined as the manufacturer's maximum specified power output/input that the device can handle, continuously, under normal operating conditions.
Examples:
For an electric motor, it would be the maximum -continuous- draw it could handle without overheating/being damaged.
For a microwave, the nominal power is how much the magnetron can handle (and dissipate) while running constantly without overheating.

Thanks for the link. It's something I've noticed but couldn't really explain well. Makes it difficult to compare bars. Let's hope handlebars start just getting rise and sweep numbers in the future.

If it's not $800 how else are they going to justify $8-12k for a bike?
