9 Unique Rides from Whistler's Brutal 1,460m Back Forty Cross-Country Race
@DMal: I'd say racing vs riding is different. My 'riding' pressure for these tires is about 1-2 psi higher, because like you, I get too excited. And I'm ok with that. I just trade the efficiency for being able to smash a bit more, but I have the energy for that while riding.
For racing, I'm tired and trying to recover on the descents so it's easier to focus on being smooth and flow.

Not a typo!
On my Maxxis I was 17/18 psi in their xc tires. These seemed to have a stiffer casing and handle the lower tire pressure well. Let's assume a possible +/- 1 on our respective tire pressure gauges, but I was surprised myself. I wasn't able to corner berms hard without the tire ripping off, but I decided to sacrifice that for the improved tracking and forgiveness everywhere else.

I think the stiffer casing has a lot to do with it. On my Maxxis I was 17/18 psi in xc tires. These seemed to handle the lower tire pressure well, couldn't hit berms hard but there weren't a lot of those on this course. Lots of roots and rocks and I wanted that smooth tracking ride like you were talking about.
