Nerding Out: Why You Shouldn't Worry Too Much About Weight
Yes, and no... I just picked up an Ibis Ripley AF, which Jenson weighed at ~32.5 lbs, and I love it! Would I pay a couple grand more for the lighter carbon version? No, I would not. But would I have chosen a 34+ lb trail bike to save a few hundred bucks more? Also no. I think one has to draw the line somewhere, and weight does matter (to me) --along with many other factors...

Field Trip: Ibis's $2,999 Ripley AF is a Precision Weapon
@nogirlsatgt: Thanks for the clarification; but I agree that's too bad, as I hadn't even yet been able to convince myself to drop $4199 on any bike. I see they also now offer a $4099 Ripley AF SLX, so I suppose they figured they needed to distance the carbon and aluminum offerings...

Field Trip: Ibis's $2,999 Ripley AF is a Precision Weapon
Ibis raised the price --but they also altered the brakes (now 4-pot), tires (2.4" Maxxis), and maybe more... I'm happy to pay an extra $200 for 4-pot vs 2-pot brakes, myself. Now I just hope my back-ordered pre-order comes in some day!

Field Trip: Ibis's $2,999 Ripley AF is a Precision Weapon
About DOUBLE now, as I just noticed that the carbon Ripley recently skyrocketed in price! Deore used to start at $4199, as I recall, but today it's listed at $5099 --and add at least another $849 for carbon rims, if you're really looking to get light. I'll take the slightly heavier AF model any day, myself.

Field Trip: Giant's $2,500 Trance X Loves Slow Speed Technical Trails
Love that PB is evaluating value trail bikes! Would've preferred a review of the $3300 model up of the Giant Trance X 29 2, with better components; but based on this review it does seem that it would not have fared particularly differently, as the "active" rear suspension would be the same.

Field Trip: Rocky Mountain's $1,669 Growler Doesn't Hold Back on the Descents
Love that PB is evaluating value trail bikes! Only wish some of the picks would've been a little more comparable, and slightly higher up the food chain, closer to the sweet spot. Next let's see ~$2K USD hardtails (in the $1700-2300 range): $1849 Devinci Kobain SLX 12S hardtail w/Marzocchi Z2 fork & Shimano 12s drivetrain; $1999 Canyon Stoic 4; $2099 Rocky Mountain Growler 50 hardtail; $2239 Marin San Quentin 3 hardtail.

Field Trip: Vitus' $1,449 Sentier Hits That Middle Ground
@diegosk: Yeah, part of my point might have been unclear; but I think the Sentier 27 is the better Sentier, so I wish it --or maybe the full sus Escarpe-- was representing Vitus here. For a budget 29er in the same family, I would definitely choose the Nukeproof Scout 290 Scout (or Ragley Big Al) over the Sentier 29. But admittedly that's partly because personally I find 2.35"W tires (like those on the Sentier 29) too narrow for my taste.
