Los Alamos, New Mexico RunsWithScissors: bikes

Still a little shocked at how good this bike turned out. It's my second complete frame. Maybe I have a future as a frame builder. I hope so. It's a lot of fun...

Here's something you don't see every day... A hand built steel gravel bike with a gearhub and a belt drive. 6 weeks ago this was a pile of steel tubes and an idea. I love building bikes :)

Frankenbike is more or less finished, just needs paint. Rode it through ice and snow to work and I could see it rusting before my eyes when I got there. Wiped with WD-40 for the moment. Today I'll wax it.

Head tube just about ready to go on. Tomorrow we clean, flux and braze, then it's on to the seat stays and trimming the seat tube to length. My rat rod road bike is taking shape...

First frame project: Chopping and reworking a 62cm road bike into a 56cm gravel bike. Keeping c-stays, down & seat tubes hooked to bb, shortening top & down tubes, dropping top tube 6cm, relocating seatstays adding modern style headtube. So far, so good...

Practice joint #4. Getting better, but still too hot. Think I need a smaller tip. At this rate I think I'll be up to speed in another week or two. Depends on how busy the rest of the shop is. Spring is coming...

How much $$ it takes to get into frame building depends on what you think you need to do it. You can spend hundreds on tube notchers and angle measuring devices, but files, paper templates and a protractor will also work.

Everything is finally here. Tomorrow I get to light the torch and see how this stuff works.

...and that's a finished jig more or less. I think this is gonna work better for me than a full frame jig. You can weld upside down or vertical, but why fight gravity if you don't have to? I'd rather clamp a tacked frame in a stand where it's easy twist it around to stay on the flat.

First try at tube mitering. 60degree joint using a paper template and a half round file. I think I got this...

1st effort with BikeCAD. Trying to make lug frame angles reproduce the geometry of my BME B8. It gets a lot harder to design when you can't pick the joint angles. One tiny change creates chaos elsewhere in the design.

My new low (no) budget suspension service bench is more or less complete. Special tools on the left, oil cabinet on the right and everything you need to grip grab or hold any kind of shock or fork in between. The only thing left is to build in a fork dyno next to the workstand. Maybe next month.

The wheel department in our expanded retail space is taking shape. We just took over the other half of our building and at least doubled our retail footprint. Business is good.

Easily the lightest wheel set I've ever built. CarbonSpeed rims, Industry Nine road/gravel/CX hubs, Sapim Laser spokes. If 1120g isn't light, I'd like to know what is.

FloatX compression damper cartridge. Designed to disassemble itself inside the eyelet. 2 parts screw together with 2.5Nm torque. Both parts held in place by O-rings. O-ring holds back half w/ more than 2.5Nm friction...

2021 X2 rebuild is a long walk if you do the whole kit. Eyelet gets COMPLETELY stripped down to the casting. Reservoir, damper body, damper controls, all of it gets removed and reinstalled. I think some shops won't service 'em, and others (including Fox) will just lie about how much they do.

And now we test... Sessioned the only good jump on my way home and it felt great. If it lives through the next week it gets glossy finish and goes home. I definitely wanna do more of this work.

This is probably waaay more length than I really need, but the carbon cloth is 6" wide and I have no other use for it, so why not?

Rubber eroded from the negative air seal head. Might be why this X2 wouldn't maintain air pressure. Fox doesn't tell you to use Float Fluid on this part during assembly, but maybe they should. We do full rebuilds on X2 for $200 including shipping both ways. Typical turnaround time is 24-48 hrs. Beanie's Bike Shop, Los Alamos, NM.

If this O-ring fails your Fox Float will bleed out through the damper controls and turn into a pneumatic pogo stick. The good news: this O-ring comes in the rebuild kit and Beanie's Bike Shop does mail order work...

Beanie's carbon wheels are now available in MTB flavor on Hope Pro4 hubs and CarbonSpeed rims. $1k/set with free rebuilds as long as the Mfr. warranties the parts. $650/set on Spank aluminum rims, same warranty.

road testing a new service offering: X2 oil change and IFP reset. Squishy noises in the damper are often caused by air in the oil. For $75 we'll change the oil in your X2, reset the IFP to proper depth/pressure, and turn it around in about 24 hours since it's just oil.
