Review: Specialized’s New Epic 8 - All the Speed You Need
@skywalkdontrun: Prices differ by country, so things might be slightly better in the US. And maybe it was an extreme example, since some other models are not quite as bad. But sneaking in sub-standard parts wherever they think their buyers aren’t looking is just fundamentally dishonest. Btw it was an SX cassette, NX chain and no-name hubs which I specifically looked up because I just couldn’t believe it. In the end I bought an Open with full Ekar and HED wheels for less money.

Review: Specialized’s New Epic 8 - All the Speed You Need
@wolftwenty1: I don't think anyone would argue that their bikes haven't been quite good for years. I'd just never buy one because their value and penny pinching is so abysmally atrocious. Was looking at the Diverge recently: SX cassette on a 5k+ bike i think. WTF? And its still a mainstream, volume brand, nothing special. Good, yes, but so are plenty of others.

Review: The Pivot Shadowcat is Niche & Nimble
What I heard from people knowledgeable about bike engineering: The absolute quality of bearings on a bike doesn’t matter all that much. Proper alignment, size of bearings, weather shielding and avoiding pressure washers has far greater influence than the difference between high-end and average quality bearings.

Newmen Launches New Phase 30 & Beskar 30 MTB Wheels
@spoegel: If these are the current FADE hubs, they might be decent but nowhere near DT Swiss levels of reliability. Given the choice, I’d take Newmen rims laced to DT hubs. Best of both worlds.

Newmen Launches New Phase 30 & Beskar 30 MTB Wheels
The DH rim should be the toughest aluminium rim in existence. A lot more material than any other MTB rim and Newmen rims in general are quite sturdy for their weight.

First Ride: Revel Rascal V2
@plustiresaintdead: In the aftermarket this is true for Fox as well. However, bike manufacturers can order all kinds of options that are not available aftermarket, so i guess if they wanted they could spec a longer offset.

Push Industries Releases Nine. One Inverted Fork
@nvranka: Be real, many supercar buyers are collectors, not drivers. A similar thing might be true for this fork. The typical customer will be a well-off white collar worker in his 40s or 50s who treats himself to an expensive "dream build".

Must Watch: Urban Freeride in Southern Japan in 'Ayato's Way'
Love how its not all perfectly smooth and effortless. They left enough raw edges to make the riding feel like its always one small thing away from disaster.

Review: 2024 Norco Optic - High Pivot, Short Travel
@onawalk: Comparing total bike weights is not really helpful if the bikes dont use the exact same parts. Just for refrence, frame weights for trail/enduro are typically somewhere between 6lbs and 9lbs. With only a few extreme examples outside of that range. E.g. S-Works Carbon Stumpy is lighter, new Privateer (Alu) is heavier. So you are never saving 4 lbs between carbon and alu versions of the same frame. Now the problem is that many companies design their frames for carbon and then spend the minimum necessary effort to replicate something similar in alu. Which makes those alu frames much heavier than they could be. But weight differences between most carbon frames and comparable frames by companies which work primarily or only in aluminium are at most 1-2 lbs.
