@lister11: those chainstays were too short so the bikes looped out too easily. Combined with the "attack position" riding stance of the era instead of a comfy relaxed hinge and the weight distribution was all wrong.
Watch Reese's video, it wasn't just bolt on and go ride, you basically have to size up the frame for reach and have appropriately long enough chainstays to keep the front planted.

Oak Components Releases Aftermarket Levers for Shimano Brakes
@ddocky: you can cable tie a piece of stick to the stump of the lever and it will function well enough.
Brake feel might be a bit wooden though.
