@UVbike: you are correct for your purposes... but what you don't take into account is topography. I live in the Colorado foothills at 6000 ft. ALL of our rides start with a significant, steep uphill. There is ZERO change of keeping your heart rate at 135 unless you decided to walk.. even then I doubt it would stay below 135.

Here is a thought process some of you probably won't understand.. but I will go for it anyhow..
Heartrate --- Max heart rate is approx. 220 bpm minus your age, correct?
So, when you are 20 you can max out at around 200 ish .. riding is much easier on your heart because you can maintain a 70-80% range relatively easy.
Fast Forward.. Age 50.. max heart rate is 170 ish. 80% of that is 146.. Well, climbing on a mtn bike in Colorado you are hardly ever not near redline. Doing that 4-5 days a week is actually not very good for you..
E-bikes allow some people to ride more, not because they aren't capable, but because it is actually better for their bodies and heart, they can control their heart rate and actually improve their cardiovascular endurance.
If you just have opinions and haven't ridden one, take the time to at least try it. It is not as easy as most think it is like a motorcycle, you actually have to keep pedaling or it stops.
Plus.. they are fun as hell..

gets easier and then if you are lucky your kids will be well adjusted productive adults and you will know you did a great job. Pretty much an empty nester and it definitely opens up all kinds of time, even picked up a new sport...
