He most likely had a Line of Credit with the bank. I think they are called demand loans. Depending if it's a secured (by some kind of asset like a house) or unsecured. They can say you know what ... we don't want to keep the line of credit open so please pay back what you owe ... could have happened even if they were servicing the debt if it was a Line of credit type scenario.
