Video: Riding With The BLM

by Tyler Maine

What is the meaning of mountain biking? Why do we ride? In this continuing Kitsbow video series, we explore what it means to ride from the motivations and perspectives of those whose tireless efforts have lent the sport meaning and inspiration to our own lives.

In this second chapter, we head to the arid hills of Kern County to learn about what mountain biking means to Brien Chartier: the BLM Ranger tasked with policing the region's public wilderness lands. Recreational permissions for mountain biking can be a sensitive topic in some places in California, but Chartier's refreshing perspective holds the key for building a more sustainable future for every type of trail user.

Maybe if more BLM, Forest Service, NPS rangers patrolled by bike we would have more trails open to us. It seems that most rangers I meet have no clue what mountain biking actually does to trails. They just think we tear things up but don't realized that a pack of horses does way more damage but they get access and we don't.

^^Agreed. This guy is awesome, but unfortunately the BLM in particular has a lot of issues that many people are not aware of; however, many of the issues stem from people misusing the lands. I like that he mentions how diverse their mission is because some of the things BLM does is great, some not so much...

Either way, I want his life...

Education is key, they do have to deal with a lot of grandfathered and vocal opponents. Great to see the Rangers out on bikes to educate everyone, not just other mountain bikers that we are a responsible user group.

I ride up in this same are a a few times a month. They should have did some clips of the Cannell Plunge, Just Outstanding, Frog Meadow, and Thobias Peek. The area were he was riding is only fun when it's cool out otherwise it tends to be 105+ and will just cook the hell out of you.

In this area by the lake it pretty much sucks. Get up around 5000ft and it's not bad.

What I wanna know is how does a Park Ranger afford $600 shorts???

I'd love to try some of their kit, but I'm a little leery about how they'll fit once I've removed and sold my kidneys to pay for them...

Dream job, indeed!

Blm is the biggest land owner of the west.
Blm, epa, irs, bureau after bureau...unelected folks making laws.
Its not this agents fault,..but so many big gov. Folks forget, "this land is your land..."(thx to imba, blm is improving)
Wish I was in a free country, so I could ride n carry too.
