How Much Do 2026 World Cup Downhill Bikes Really Weigh?

@zmums: I think it's more there's an optimal range and if you go too far one way or the other it comes at a performance cost. Let's say from the data that 38-45 is optimal ( depending on riders preference). Id.no more want a sub 33 dh bike than a 50+ one, they'd both suck imo. I've had a 30ish enduro bike and it was skittish as hell at times and a 50+ ebike that rode like a barge in certain scenarios and was why I replaced it with a 43lb sl, which I love in comparison. My Chainsaw DH is 38.5 and I don't want it any lighter

@jfog52: agree with you on nominal, need to regulate peak. From AI..Nominal power is the continuous, steady-state power output that a device, motor, or energy system is designed to deliver safely and reliably over long periods without overheating or sustaining damage. In a vital test they got 10k vertical feet out of battery and range extender on a levo, average power was around 400W. Surely that is actually the bikes nominal not 250W, smoke and mirrors...

Given that multi use trails allow horses the logical cut off for class 1 should be 1HP, approx 750W. Unfortunately the wording around class 1 is so vague. We really need proper regulation to sort this mess out

@Kilian1b15Gt: yeah as an individual which is why I suggested the UCI act as a middle man to collective bargain. BMC members can access insurance policies that specifically cover rock climbing and mountaineering offering $10 million on medical and helivac coverage for less than you are paying and all members automatically have 3rd party liability coverage. The UCI have the power to do something similar sound they choose

@bohemi: I think what the UCI could do is use there size and bargaining power to set up a life changing injury policy that racers could purchase at a more affordable rate. The British Mountaineering Council ran a similar scheme for members for a long time. The rates were incredibly low compared to what you could access as an individual

@bohemi: yeah there's not much money in mtb unless you are at the very top. Trail building can be no different, insurance is on you, for most it's a pain project not a career. I think with racers most are pretty young so you don't think of the worst case when weighing up the cost benefit. They could do with some better advice about covering themselves with some life changing injury coverage

@bohemi: the UCI could insist on terms that exceed the law of any country and require teams to follow that if they want to participate. Their rules do not supercede the minimum requirements under employment law however. So at minimum the team must follow the duty of care to an employee set out in law by the relevant country. Impossible to know what that is without knowing the laws of the relevant country and the persons specific employment status but UCIs regulations (or lack there of) are not the be all and end all
