Video: Bike Couples' Ride
Were you guys tailing me when I was mountain biking with my boyfriend? :p Glad to know I'm not the only girl who feels frustrated sometimes! In the defence of girlfriends out there: At least we are trying! But seriously, guys, if you want to introduce your gf to your sport and take her along with you, don't chuck her on a black slope and race down like it's competition day! We all need to start somewhere, and it really doesn't help when we can barely get our butts down the hill and feel like a loser all day. You might have started mountain biking when you were 15 and had no concept of death, but starting in your late 20s or 30s, and having low levels of testosterone, sometimes is a bit of a hindrance. There are girls who shred, but I'm sure they didn't reach that level overnight. Heading out for a mountain biking day is still a frustrating process for me, because I hate being left way way way behind and not being able to do what you just did makes me feel like I'm really lousy (which I am, and I have way too high expectations of myself, hence the frustration). But each day out, I'm getting just that little bit better, and maybe a little bit faster, and that little bit of improvement feels great. I don't think I'll ever be able to keep up with my bf, but I hope I won't be too far behind in the future. His waiting skills are also improving ;) If you're not willing to sit out the beginner stage, either don't introduce the sport at all or find her a good skills coaching class. And when she gets better, you'll have a biking partner till you're 60.
