SRAM Patent Application Shows Pressure Relief Valves in Fork Crown
Forks need the pressure relief valves because the additional air pressure build up in the lower legs act as a second positive air spring. That "second" positive chamber has a larger volume than the air spring itself and can not equalize with the negative. This creates an chamber that is extra ramp-y and speed sensitive adding unpredictability to fast compressions. Shocks do not have an equivalent chamber that acts like this. Forks also typically use much less air pressure than shocks so the 5 psi difference when going from sea level to 10,000 ft is a much bigger impact than that same 5 psi in a shock. And you have to count that air twice for forks because of the additional Lower Leg chamber. Thats the easy explanation.

This makes zero sense.. the point of the pressure relief valves is to relieve pressure build up in the Lower Legs to prevent the pressure from negatively impacting the air spring. It does nothing to damper function.
