After a great week riding our Nicolai Geometron G19s at Ride Portugal, a DH holiday company based on the Algarve, the team headed to Faro to start the 2017 race season. To say the lads were excited to get racing after a long off season training, was an understatement! All of the guys did this race last year, so the track was no surprise to them and they were all hoping for a strong result. The track is fast, fairly simple and very pedally in the middle, so a real fitness test for the start of the season. Racing was going to be tight and a single mistake would be costly in finals. This race is the first in the Portugal Cup series and a UCI class 2 event, so there were a number of fast riders in attendance. Here's a run down the track with Jack who had some traffic to dodge in an attempt to do a full timed practice run:

Despite mixed weather throughout Saturday and Sunday morning practice, all of the lads got on well and were feeling fast and confident going into seeding. The wind had been causing problems on the open hillside throughout Saturday, but on Sunday it settled and meant everyone could push as hard as they dared without the fear of being blown off course by the wind. In seeding Jack was 2nd, Will 9th and George 10th, so everyone was excited for racing and looking forward to challenging for the podium places!

One Vision Race Coaching supported rider Tom Caffrey put in an impressive run with a time of 2.41 taking 35th place. This was a great start to his season and we hope to see him on top of a lot of senior podiums this year! Also a big shout out to Sarah Crellin who took third place despite a crash and her first elite women podium finish. Sarah will also be working with One Vision Race Coaching throughout 2017. As for the main team riders it was a great start to the 2017 season: James Hurst finished in 22nd place with a 2.36. Will Jones just missed out on the top 10 with a 2.30 in 14th place, not quite having the run he's capable of. Jack and George were only separated by 0.8 of a second! George finished in 7th place with a 2.26 and Jack in 3rd and the teams first podium of the season with a 2.25, only 0.01 off 2nd!

Yeah I know not cool! We were all trying to do full runs at the end of the day and didn't anticipate how busy the track was going to be! Normally I'll never shout at anyone to move and just pull over and wait. Apologises to anyone I offended there.

@jackreadingDH: At least you didn't toss anyone off (their bike)

@jackreadingDH: don't think you did anything wrong buddy. It's bloody hard to hear through a full face with wind noise too. In fairness the last guy didn't really have anywhere to go (ahh dude haha) but you said thanks to the rest. I'd have no problem moving over to let a faster rider pass.

All looked fair enough, though I like the Dom Joly comment

"Hello... no, I'm in a DH race... in Portugal.... no it's rubbish... yeeeahhh total rubbish.... ciao!" Smile

Remember pro riders are riding twice as fast as the rest of us. You are behind a rider and you have no idea what they might do, hence you shout 'Rider', as long as you get a thanks in there everyone should be happy. Shouting 'Rider' on it's own is useless, also shout 'on the right' or left to indicate which side you are intending to pass on.
