@jayacheess: To reduce it to "That crown goes to whomever has the best technical skillet." is exactly as small minded as to say that only the watts per kilo matter.
Clearly the answer lies in the middle, as the worlds most technically skilled rider is not going to beat even Pidcock on a DH course if he/she has no fitness.

I'm a MTBer , just got back from a week in Pal Arinsal. No Lycra here.

Except it sort of does , when you are also one of the best techincally pushing those watts. I get it , it hurts to see a part timer roadie doing this to mountain biking, but it is the situation we are in.

@betsie: It might be the most entertaining, but from cold analysis perspective no Olympic event = unimportant side show. Which is probably the best for DH.

Here is a controversial take…
XCO is the MTB blue riband event above all others, Pidcock has dominated the races that all others prioritize above everything else , the Olympics. He has also won about every other race he has entered , his one Achilles heel being end of season races when he has started the year early.
Pidcock is the best XCO rider and therefore the worlds best mountainbiker. He is also probably the GOAT given his win rate. No one expects him to race multiple World Cup races during the year , it is after all his side gig and doesn’t need some local legend attendance record.
