Video: The Return of Psychosis
Totally constructive dude, I honestly really appreciate that you’re making an effort to understand my position here! It’s really easy to throw around the idea of equal representation in the sport, but I think solving that with selectively choosing media to over-represent that group, instead of fixing the problem at its root (and getting more girls stoked to come to these events) is pretty lame. That being said, I totally agree that I could have probably done some more digging and see who was going to be in contention for the podium in the women’s category. Truth be told, I was pretty unfamiliar with most of the females startlist and had little guidance from the producers/cycling club in terms of that category. Not shifting blame though, still for sure my fault. In between setting up and tearing down my crane, and down hiking dead dog, I had time to steal 4 interviews at the top. 3 of which ended up being the entire psycho men’s podium.

Video: The Return of Psychosis
@TheInsideLine: There were 180 dudes, and 20 girls. There was budget for me, and one 2nd shooter who opted to stay at the bottom for the majority of the race, so no/very few action shots from him. With 20 girls dropping in a row, with about a minute between them, you have time to get and up move to change shots twice, maybe 3 times. Every time you move, you risk losing another shot. There were 4 girls shots that I chose out of that coverage that I felt I executed well, and the riders looked great in. That's a 20% selection rate, which is actually higher than that of the guys. I scrolled through the video, there's 31 male riders represented, which is a 16% selection rate. With 180 dudes, I was probably able to get up and move 10-15 times, only moving after I knew I had gotten "the shot" every time. The only way I would have been able to achieve a higher representation (at least in terms of action shots) of females would have been to use footage that either I executed poorly, or that would represent the girls in a bad light. I would argue no one wants a bad clip of them in a video just for the sake of it being there. The majority of the riding footage was actually shot in the 2 days before the event as control footage, primarily because I knew race day would be extremely hectic and the odds of me getting everything I needed alone were pretty low. This was unpaid time I donated to the project to make sure it came together the way I knew it could. In light of the cycling club being bummed about the representation in the vid, here's the list of riders they forwarded for me to focus on. Kurt Sorge Reg Mullet Andy Bostock Yoann Barelli Hannah Bergemann Peter Matthews Jack Pellend Nick Quinn Seth Sherlock Nate Briggs Tyler Maine Brad Ewan- 26 Ewen Mackay - 26 Justin Willoughby - 26 Alexander Schmidt Joy Atalla Finn Craig - young local Yannik Schulz - local Mark “Rabbit” Ewan There's 2 girls on that list, thats a 10% representation. After I had gotten home, I tracked down Nadine Overwater and get her thoughts on the race, and those sound bytes are some of my favourite in the vid. I understand wanting more representation in the sport, but as a filmmaker hired to cover the event as it exists, I think its pretty unreasonable that this evidently systemic problem is falling on my shoulders to solve.
