I heard back from ION's distributor in the USA.
The pad is the same across all sizes.
This makes very little sense to me, clearly an size XL knee has more area to protect than a size S knee.
Pity, missed opportunity with a new product design.

Is the padding on these size specific? Is the pad in an XL larger than the pad in a SM?

Any idea what the dimensions of the pad itself are? How wide it is?
I need more protection on the sides of my knee. I'm looking at the TLD Raid pads but these look to have good coverage.

@FrederickJ: agreed, and on the MacRide the kid sits ‘in’ the seat whereas the shotgun it’s on the seat. The MacRide seat material is nice and grippy too.

Our MacRide came with foam grips that slid onto the bars for the kids. I also think putting anything closer to the kids face that they might bounce off of is a bad idea.
We loved our MacRide, I really miss those days.

Dakine Announces The Universal Pickup Pad
I saw a pickup that had a blue foam camping pad strapped over the tailgate that had "Dakinda" spray painted on it.
It was glorious.
