The first stop on the Cycle Solutions O-Cup DH/Super D series was off the hook, posting the second largest race in Ontario’s History. A mix of sun and clouds kept the Super D course buffed as the inaugural event took place. The course was a mix of super fast and flowy sections with some rocks and jumps thrown in for good measure. All of the competitors had smiles from ear to ear (if they weren’t picking their lung up from off the ground, haha) and said this was the perfect start for Super D in Ontario

In the 19-29 Open category there were some rippers lining up looking for gold, everyone from Expert level cross country racers to Team Canada DH racers. After the dust settled an John Fisher (Cycle Solutions) an expert XC racer took the crown over two of the provinces fastest DH racers, Matt Zdriluk (Commencal) and Rob Fraser (Trek-Primary)

2. Matt Zdriluk- Commencal- Beamsville4:05.513
3. Rob Fraser Primary –Trek- Pickering4:17.522

The 30-39 Open category had a strong field with some trail riders, ex-pro DH racers, industry guru’s and some XC racers. The course was bested by race organizer Peter Appleton (Lapierre bikes) in his first race back after a year and a half of racing with a serious back injury. It was Matt Dafoe (Giant/Adrenaline Racer) who was probably the most excited Super D participant at the race who pulled out 2nd and Dylan Elliot had a solid third place finish.

2. Matt Dafoe- Giant/Adrenaline Racer - 4:25.213
3. Dylan Elliott Ingersoll 4:37.934

Sunday’s DH race day brought us some sunnier weather and perfect May racing conditions, the spectators lined the course waiting to see who would rule the tried and true rockgarden to rock drop.

In the races largest category Senior Sport, we had a BMX race superstar Alex Brancier (Bike Zone) pull out his first ever DH win, showing some great early season form. Chris Dzavik (Trek Store), a Dirtjumping machine, showed his all around skills claiming 2nd and Steve Burnham took 3rd

2. Chris Dzavik-Trek Store Race Team-Toronto1:33.412
3. Steve Burnham 1:33.705

Everyone was waiting to see what the elite men could put down and they didn’t disappoint. What everyone was waiting for happened, a time in the 1min “teens”, Rob Fraser (Trek Primary) pulled off a 1:19, the only time under the 1:20 mark. It was Justin Brown (Cycle Solutions) who managed to grab 2nd place just a couple seconds behind while the big guy Zach Tatem (Trek Store) whipped out a third.

There definitely was a ladies class. Kristen Lake from Sweet Pete's Bike Shop won it on my Remedy 7, and it was her first ever DH race!

Congrats to Kristen! Nice to hear about new ladies in the racing scene!

It's sad however, that Peter Appleton did such a poor job of writing about the race. Is it me or is it not even clear where the actual race was? Not only do the women tend to get smaller prizes than then men...but they don't even make it into the story.

if you have read my race reports over the years you'll see that i have included women in the majority of reports.... SBR got lots of input that people were sick of just seeing pro men and pro women results after every race years ago, so for the last 2 years we have picked 4 random classes (there are 19 classes of racing, we can't print everyone) to showcase per event
My track record in promoting women's participation is very good, i have done everything from offering free skills clinics to free registration fees for women.

we hope to see more women in the future

ps- if you read the pre-race report that is where i outlined the events specific location and course specifics, race reports are about results, not the location

Thanks for the congrats, I had a great weekend for sure! I wrote my own race report on my blog. Also, shout out to John Fisher who was also visiting from XC-Land. Not only did he win the Super D, but he podiumed the DH the next day in the expert cat. However, he races elite XC, not expert as Peter reported.

Pete you da man, great event! You didn't mention masters either, but I know there is only so much space. If horseshoe is anything like Kelso, it should be a blast. Take care and see you all there.
