FrostBIKE Western Open Silver Star Fernie

What exactly is going on here? A BC Cup in the GREAT US of A? A NW Cup on the frozen tundra of Canada? Not exactly….

NDub Productions & SE Racing are collaborating by sharing series point earning opportunities in an effort to encourage cross border participation in their respective DH race series. The NW Cup based in Washington and Oregon (The PNW to those in the know) and produced by Scott Tucker and Casey Northern of NDub Productions, is in its 7th year and already starting 2014 with a ton of momentum. Round 1 hosted 484 participants in some of the tightest racing action along with rowdiest spectators that we've ever had in our history. There are 5 more opportunities to earn points in this best 5 of 6 overall series, the next of which will offer points for the BC Cup Series as well.

The BC Cup Series is a six event extravaganza that includes races throughout Eastern and Western BC. Three of the races, including the Fernie BC Cup Finals, Western Open (BC Provincials) and the Silver Star BC Cup, are spearheaded by Stephen Exley of SE Racing & Promotions and presented by Dunbar Cycles and Intense. After two years of talks the NW Cup and BC Cup series will be working together to cross-promote our events for 2014: May 18th NW Cup in Port Angeles & the July 20th BC Cup at Silver Star Bike Park in Vernon BC. It’s important to note that BC Cup racers attending the NW Cup should not expect the event to run like BC Cup event and vice versa. The idea behind the cross promotion is for riders to experience the differences between each series and for each organizer to learn from the other to ensure DH racing is strong for years to come.

So how does this all work?
Scott: For the upcoming NW Cup on May 16-18, riders will be asked to indicate on the registration form that they plan to participate in the BC Cup series, and we will interpret their results to align with the categories of the BC Cup. We always enjoy Socialists coming to town and trying their best to compete in a more civilized environment. SExley: "Nothing like getting shoved into the back of a U-Haul and having the door close behind you to make you civilized!)

SExley: For the Silver Star BC scheduled for July 20th in Vernon BC, NW Cup riders are being invited to participate in our series and experience the differences between each series like indoor plumbing and electricity. NW Cup riders will receive points towards their series and be fully eligible for any draw prizes, cash prizes and podium awards as part of the BC Cup series, not to mention seeing firsthand how much faster Canadian racers are compared to their American counterparts.

What are the categories for each event?
Scott: The NW Cup is a USA Cycling sanctioned event, so as such, we use the following categories: Pro, Category 1 (expert), Category 2 (intermediate), and Category 3 (beginner). Within each category (except pro) there are age and gender breakdowns. Any Question can be e-mailed to NWCup@yahoo.com

SExley: The BC Cup at Silver Star Bike Park is sanctioned by Cycling BC and all international race licenses are recognized. If you do not have and “International Race license” you will need to purchase a one event license at the event. All American racers attending the BC Cup / NW Cup event should also have medical insurance while in Canada. Health insurance is free in Canada for Canadians, but Americans visiting will need insurance coverage while racing. It can cost from $25 to $75 for 7 days and needs to be purchased before entering Canada. IF you have any questions on the BC Cup event please email info@seracing.ca

What are the licensing requirements and costs associated with them?
Scott: USA Cycling requires an annual license for all Pro and Cat 1 racers. Pro licenses must be issued by USA Cycling and your UCI Pro license will work. Cat 1 riders must carry an annual license either from USA Cycling or the UCI. Cat 2 and 3 riders can either use their annual license, or purchase a single event license for $10 on-site. Canadian racers should note that hockey helmets are not allowed on course, an approved full face helmet must be worn during the event.

SExley: Cycling BC licenses can be purchased through CCN BIKES or you can purchase a single event license for $10 or $30 on-site. You can not race as a Pro without a International Race License.

Is pre-registration available and is there a “participation cap”?

Scott: Pre-reg is available through ccnbikes.com. Riders can also register on-site with no penalty and no one will be turned away as we have no cap. We do ask that as many people carpool from their hotels as possible as parking can be tight.

SExley: Pre-reg is open at www.ccnbikes.com search word "BC Cup" and no rider cap for all BC Cup events. Racers can also register on site on Friday night and Saturday (cash only). Racers under 18 must have a parent or guardian present to sign the waivers regardless if you have pre-registered or not. Lift tickets for the resort are not included in the entry fee and can be purchased onsite for 50% off once you have picked up your race plate. NW Cup race plates will not be used at the July 20th BC Cup event. Each rider will be assigned and given a BC Cup plate to use and keep.

Are all riders treated the same regardless of their citizenship?
Scott: We at the NW Cup take no responsibility for the actions of the spectators, other than the obvious requirements of staying the heck out of the tape. All cheers, jeers, skin exposure, and chants are managed by mob rule in the heckling sections. It’s all in good fun. We would like to be clear however, that when comparing times and speed, we use US standard measurements rather than that goofy metric system that no one understands.

SExley: No, as the American racers will be significantly slower, steps have been taken to ensure they leave BC with a positive experience regardless of their race time. Special cheering clinics have been put on so US riders that are walking the more technical sections of the track (CND uses one course for all racers) are not embarrassed and SE Racing along with Dunbar Cycles have created special spirit ribbons for racers that tried really hard, but may have finished minutes after their Canadian DH idols..
