Lake Minnewanka Trail Notice - Alberta
I have ridden this trail regularly for 15 years and have never seen a bear (or even any sign of one) but more significantly I have never seen a “seasonal restriction” that is specifically directed at Bikers. What I have seen, in increasing numbers, are hikers that have a very condescending and sanctimonious attitude towards Mtb bikers. These folks feel that Mtb bikes should not desecrate the wilderness and they make their sentiments known despite bikers slowing, smiling, and using proper and polite trail ettiquite. I think it is probable that one (or likely an organized Cabal) of these people influenced Parks Canada to exclude biking during prime hiking season not prime bear season. Bears move to the alpine between July and Sept – they hang out at lower elevations (like Lake Level where the Trail is located) during the Spring and Fall. If PC was really concerned about Bears, the closure period would be reversed. Further every single attack which has occurred in the area (none actually happened on the trail) has only involved Hikers, yet the restriction only applies to Bikers. This is total (but unfortunaletly typical) Government pandering to vocal special interest groups.
