Very interested on why this is "the best" and E-MTBs are "the worst". Probably because this caters to the 0,01% of the world mountain bike population (specifically the one living in the PNW and Sea-to-sky corridor) whereas E-MTBs are enjoyed by a huge amount of people with great satisfaction. Yet this is ok, whilst 20nm more on a motor are "deeply concerning for reasons of trail access"

@mikekazimer: you are making an extreme occurrence a recurrent problem. In your privileged position as a professional bike tester you have probably gotten dozens of "mystery error messages" on E-MTBs, and as an expert rider in one of the most demanding locations in North America you probably regularly ride routes that could kill any battery, but the truth is that most mountain bikers out there are perfectly happy with their E-MTBs, which have gotten amazingly good, and ride in the "sweet spot" where battery capacity is never an issue. This, whilst reaping the rewards of bikes that allow them to ride more than they normal would, being less drained for the rest of the day's activities (because families, spouses, etc.) or simply enjoying riding more. Our local hill is less than 100m in elevation yet Wednesday night rides in summer have become tons of fun as more people started showing up on E-MTBs, since we can lap out the trails and amass enough descending to quench the thirst until most of us can ride again on the weekend. It's good to step out of the golden palace sometimes...
