A quick trailside repair on how to fix a broken shift cable

 Some rear derailleurs actually start with their untensioned position at on the largest cog (easiest gear). Its always weird when one of them rolls through the shop cuz the trigger shifters work opposite (like on you front derrailleur) which throws a creature of habit like me way off BUT i've always thought this was an awesome idea cuz if you did snap your cable in the sticks wouldn't it be better to be stuck in your granny gear than the 12tooth? And then use the same trick with the limit screws to get 2 or 3 gears down into something more useful (i'd rather be on my 28 than my 16 anyday) and then you'd still be able to use your front derailleur between the granny and middle ring. My guess is that is not as prominent because mechanical failure and wildnerness extraction take a back door to weight saving and the other system is probably lighter (and if you think about it the physics of releasing to move to smaller cogs makes more sense.). I don't know. Just a thought

 what you have just stated is impossible. it takes more tension to shift into the bigger rings, so if you cable snaps you just took away all the tension.

 Your right when talking about a traditional (by todays standards) mech. However back in the day "Rapid Rise" mech.'s were more common. The tension on a rapid rise is reverse... returning the chain to the largest cog....

 I thought this was gonna be some crazy method to magically splice the broken cable together so the derailleur still works. i was sorely disapointed. solid advice though!
