i was riding with him at the time and to me it looks like its just a bit of metal putting tension on the chain. hope that kinda helped :L

its a spoke wrapped around the axle pressing down on the chain

does it keep in line ? i mean it doesnt jump off ? .. always thought i needed a cage or pulley..

im not sure exactly how he did it but im pretty sure he has bent the spoke in such a way that the chain cant slip off , ill tell you how he did it when i see him next!
