My 25 years of mtb party
25 years of mtb for me = excuse for a get together, at Pine Valley, Richmond forest park, the heart of MTB in NZ, as far as I'm concerned.

That is Rob Metz, the Zerode guy, showing the rest of us how to ride a bike, as he has done for the last 20 years! His bike is one he made himself of carbon about 5 years ago. Basically the Dh layout with a shorter linkage for 160mm travel and easier gears, but still 8speed alfine. His bike is mint. There are a bunch of Dh / g1 bikes with big back sprockets on them being used in a more trail bike manner. They pedal sweet so why not, when you watch it roll it runs a heap better than the derailler bikes.

He looks pretty confident on that bike, it rolls over everything. I really wanted the G1 but came to the conclusion that its a heavy DH bike, around 40lbs.
He made it himself out of carbon? He got the designs/measurements from Zerode?
Funny I would never think they'd be used as a trail bike...seems like a great idea now I see it happen. I love the gearbox idea, but it does come up heavy.

Yeah, Rob paid himself mega bucks for that design!
A gear hub in the middle of a bike is a bunch of extra parts so they are heavier than a derailler bike, but I don't think many people care about the weight after they ride through one or two rough sections! The bikes are quite different to normal (unless you are coming off a balfa BB7 as your DH bike, and commute on a bike with an Nexus hub) and it takes a while to tune your style to take full advantage of the upsides and to no longer notice the differences.

Thats pretty insane of him to get that off them, I dread to think how much he had to fork out for it...What does it come to weigh wise then once the carbon jobby has been done?
I'd love to come out to NZ but the visas are difficult to obtain .. I think I might try and get a sponsor to get over with you and those amazing mountains.
