 Canada: we call it the "West Coast" because it's the coast on the west side of North America - makes sense

'Murica: we call it the "Pacific NorthWest" because it's in the northwest corner of our country - makes no sense


Although in keeping with their trend, I think I shall start referring to the west coast as the Pacific South West...
