Our car hitting a booby trap at the start of the Baja 1000
Our car hitting a booby trap at the start of the Baja 1000. The suspension obviously wasn't doing it's job, but it was a nasty trap and it took out a lot of cars. Luckily nobody was hurt bad. I wasn't in the car as they had me scheduled to get in later in the race.

Those mexicans are like animals, no worse than animals. Look at them scrounge for parts on the $100,000 car they just destroyed, not to mention the driver and codriver who nearly died! They have to be the most unintelligent people!

Well, I'd have to disagree with your sentiment there. I've been to enough Nascar, Moto-x, and local dirt track races to know that idiots cheering for wrecks are not exclusive to the Mexican race, and neither is theft. I've had just as much of my racing gear, etc. stolen here as I have in Mexico, if not more. I would also venture to guess that if we had all of our races through our city streets & towns (instead of behind big fences) you'd see the same stuff happening here. I can also tell you that if I called Tim & Blaise (my 2 friends in the car) and told them we were racing in Mexico next week they would be down there in a second- We love Mexico and the people there (99% of them anyway, about the same % as anywhere else). Maybe a few of you should take a trip down sometime, you might be surprised.

building traps for cars so the cars get destroyed so they can steal the parts is pretty unique to the Mexican race tho. where else does that happen?

I think that was in '02 or '03.. after so many yrs I can't remember anymore! and no, that car didn't finish- The motor was smashed and the frame & tranny broke. I was halfway to our first pit, about an hour away when they called me on the radio to come get 'em! We had another car running the race (in a different class) so luckily it wasn't a complete loss- we still had some racing/fun going on.

idk where i stand. Im half mexican, i desert race (moto that is) so i feel for the racers. So yeah, the spectators did flip their car and push it outta the way and helped the drivers out, Some stole parts, and others just watched. its not like we dont have people in the US who dont steal. You just dont see people stealing like this in the US because our races are organized better and the courses are untouched by anyone who is not staff. I would love to race the Baja 1000 someday on my trusty honda. It would be a dream come true and a living hell come true. Just gotta watchout for the banditos who would gladly steal your whole pit truck and everything inside.
