lightning shut down the lifts, this much is understood. The stages were such that riders must take a lift to a certain part of the mountain, to start pedaling to the start or whatever the stage called for. . . when the lift was shut down, race organizers could not just simply change the entire format of the race and say "just pedal to the top". it would not be fair to make such a drastic change to plans, so they cancelled the stage.
I still can't tell if they are complaining or just commenting about the pedally-ness of the stages.
Personally, I think having to pedal in a stage is what really makes enduro unique. It means that you really have to have all around fitness with your descending skills in order to really do well. It helps make the downhill stages a little longer than what a plain downhill race might offer and it helps reinforce the need of a really well built all around bike that can truly do it all - penalizing those who are set up purely for either downhill or cross-country
